the_princess Posted June 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2014 I need some ideas for what to do in Warnemunde... We were thinking about leaving the city and take the train to one of the cities near, but could we spend a day in Warmemunde? We like shopping, museum, nature etc. We are easy to please ;-)

Rare Got2Cruise Posted June 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2014 We spent the morning in Rostock and the afternoon in warnemunde. It was a lovely day
Giantfan13 Posted June 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2014 Personally, I think one would be hard pressed to spend the entire day in Warnemunde, no offense meant. Only if you wanted to spend the day at the beach, that might work. Most use Warnemunde as a starting point to see other parts of Germany. We took the ferry to Rostock, spend till about 3:00 there, and then the rest of the afternoon in Warnemunde. Pleasant , relaxing day. This sounds like a nice option. This is our first port, so we don't want to stress about anything.
sddsddean Posted June 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 22, 2014 The ferry is right beside the ship...just ask someone to point the way! If you want to go further afield, we took the bus to Bad Doberan, the Molli steam train (through the streets!) to Kuhlungsborn on the coast (had lunch) and back, then train to Rostock and finally train back to Warnemunde. A great day out (9.30am - 5.30pm) for under €20 plus lunch. If you want to know how to do it, drop me an e mail for a 'how to do it' sheet. Travelanni Posted June 22, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) Is it easy to find the ferry? This sounds like a nice option. This is our first port, so we don't want to stress about anything. Hi, the boat ride either to or from Rostock is a nice option but I would just point out that THIS IS NOT A FERRY. It is a river tour boat run by a private company on which the local transport ticket is NOT valid. The main purpose is a cruise up the river from Warnemünde to Rostock and back again viewing some pretty scenery, the modern docks on one side and the old docks and shipyards on the other. The commentary is in German and most of the passengers are German tourists staying in Warnemünde who do the round trip. However, the boat does stop in Rostock and you can make the one-way trip. The cost for the round trip is 14 euro (if you stay on-board), or 10 euro one way. As most of the passengers are doing the round-trip it is sometimes difficult to get on in Rostock, depends on how many get off. The last scheduled departure from Rostock is 3:15 pm which does leave time to get the train if the boat is full. Happy cruising :) Anni http://www.travelanni.webs.com Edited June 22, 2014 by Travelanni

epixx Posted June 22, 2014 #9 Share Posted June 22, 2014 Personally, I think one would be hard pressed to spend the entire day in Warnemunde, no offense meant. Interestingly, we considered our full day in Warnemunde as one of the top days of our 12 day Baltic cruise. We rented bicycles in town and rode out on the bike trail that goes for miles right along the coast. It's gorgeous! On the way back we did spend a short time on the beach, climbed to the top of the lighthouse for some great views, and poked around the town of Warnemunde. To each his own! Musigurl Posted June 22, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 22, 2014 Highly recommend "Friends of Dave" tours: http://www.friendsofdavetours.com/ We had a great day with Dave -- true to the name of his tour, we felt like he was a friend who just happened to live in Germany, and was showing us around. He's an American who has lived in Germany for 15+ years. He's fully fluent in German and very knowledgeable about the area. His tours tend to attract people who are looking to spend a fun-filled day seeing the sights (Schwerin Palace is beautiful!)
Travelanni Posted June 22, 2014 #11 Share Posted June 22, 2014 (edited) Thank you so much everyone for all the replays. Anni, how long does the boat trip take if we just stay on the boat? Hi, the round trip is advertised at 100mins, just over an hour and a half. There are some lovely, and unusual, views of Rostock itself from the boat. Tea, coffee, alcohol and soft drinks, light snacks and full meals are all available on board. To get a good, out-side seat you have to be in the queue early. You can find the timetable at http://www.blaue-flotte.de/Fahrplan_und_Preise_15.html in German only but easy to follow. pppatpc2 Posted June 24, 2014 #12 Share Posted June 24, 2014 We took the ferry to Rostock as everyone suggested and wished we would have stayed in Warnemunde the whole day. Warnemunde is very quaint and the waterside has wonderful seafood stalls selling all kinds of wonderful fish to sample. It is a very easy walk from the ship and simply charming. the_princess Posted June 24, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted June 24, 2014 I think we will take the boat like Anni suggested and then take a tour of the city. I got a really good info sheet from Simon, which I'm sure will help us. I'm actually looking forward to this port now :-)

buggins0402 Posted June 26, 2014 #15 Share Posted June 26, 2014 Before we left I was disappointed to learn that we would port in the industrial port in Rostock instead of Warnemunde as we had originally planned to rent bikes and ride along the shore, along with sticking with the village. But, in the end, we very much enjoyed touring Rostock. We got a walking tour map from the town's Travel Information and set off for a nice pleasant walk. It was longer than the walk in Rick Steve's book and took you down some very pleasant streets. Even though it was Sunday and all the shops were closed, it was still a lovely day. Many people from the town were in the main square enjoying a city sponsored brunch, with entertainment. Note - if you port on day when three larger ships are in port you may find yourself in this port. The port does provide a free shuttle into Rostock - but not Warnemunde.
