Balcony Smoking on Carnival

The chances of someone drunk affecting my own health on a ship is rather remote. Off a ship that is a bigger issue e.g. with drunken driving and there are laws and education programs trying to address that.

Watch out for the wheelchairs!!

I have, and he was obnoxious. Women lived in fear of him every night!

It was a 15-night cruise, and he appeared in the rather small, enclosed lounge every night, already drunk. He managed to get his hands on every woman's body before he staggered out. Every night.

Uggers.

I'm sorry you had that experience. My attempt at lightening the mood (the second sentence in my post) evidently went awry. I think if I encountered someone like that who invaded my space he would be talking soprano the first time he tried to grope and I'd have security on him.

Go for it! I assume RuthC is talking about the piano bar. It would be nice to hear a soprano in there once in a while instead of those off-key, voiceless males.

What did the women he abused do when this happened? Scream holy hell for him to get his hands off them, leave immediately and get security into the lounge to remove him, or say nothing and let him continue this behavior night after night? It sounds like the women were partially responsible for putting up with this idiot. Then again I wasn't there and really am just asking questions as to what was done to stop him.

Sorry some of you did not get the sarcasm of my previous posts. I was merely trying to point out that smoking threads get ridiculous, by saying things like ban smoking, ban perfume, ban kids, ban fat people, ban old people etc. etc. I really did just find it curios that among the things being banned by some posters, no one suggested banning alcohol.

Frankly, I really have never been bothered by smoke on my balcony in many cruises, and truly I do not get too worried about what others do. I just love to cruise. These threads so often deteriorate to such a level as to become almost amusing, but often annoying.

Can we all just be grateful for the opportunity to cruise and just go have fun?

Thank you Toad - I echo your thoughts.

I joined cruise critic in March, primarily to get some tips/ideas about cruising. I will say that I have found many useful suggestions. I also enjoy living my life vicariously through cruisers who are nice enough to post from on board the ship. It has been wonderful and I thank all that have made it possible.

On my 21 cruises, I have "survived" missed ports of call, awful weather and even a broken air conditioning unit that was not fixed until the 5th day of a 7 day cruise. Through it all, I have never lost sight of the fact that I am very lucky to be on a cruise ship. I have seen sites all over the world that I doubt I could have seen any other way. God willing, I will be able to continue my love affair.

My love affair with Cruise Critic forum however has come to an end. The negativity is overwhelming and as I might have said in the 70's "it is a real drag, man." I now see OP's being blamed for missing luggage, smokers/non-smokers who have dug their heels in so deep that they cannot move an inch. There was even one post I saw that insinuated that women being groped by a drunk was somehow the fault of the women. Enough - too much negativity for me.

Take care and enjoy your cruising...

Toad raises a couple pertinent points here: "Why not try to enjoy your cruise and try not to get too upset or hung up on what others are doing?" and "Can we all just be grateful for the opportunity to cruise and just go have fun?"

The question herein is, at what point does poor behavior of fellow cruisers infringe upon the ability of others to enjoy, be grateful and have fun?

For those of us who are likely to ignore offensive activity most of the time, it does appear to me that some undesirable actions dictate circumstances which cannot be disregarded without incurring an overall degradation of the quality of the voyage. What are they?

From my perspective and experience it seems that the smoking issue leads the list of concerns in this regard. As previously mentioned, drunks, obesity, hideous misuse of cologne or perfume, boisterous conversation (inebriated or not), pushing, shoving, crowding into the queue ahead others and a few more are definitely conditions that detract from the enjoyment of sailing. However, except for the smoking bit, most of our fellow cruisers have been able to disregard most negatives as the many positive elements render the bad stuff into the minor inconvenience category.

Of course, we have never been on a booze cruise. If we do I might change my mind over the level of alcohol abuse on board. But then, what would we ever be doing on a booze cruise?

Each of these areas of concern raises its own variety of comment. This thread is about balcony smoking, not the entire gamut of odious behavior. CC has plenty of detailed threads discussing all in depth. Here are two pertinent links, sometimes humorous.

So with NCL announcing balcony smoking ban today HAL will be the last to ban. Come on HAL. Get with it.

Been on this thread since it started. Charles, yesterday someone said that NCL was going to ban smoking today? Just got up on the west coast, did it happen?

Also with my HAL so many people with inside info saying soon it will happen for us! I did call Mariners society and they did say HAL corp was looking into it. I am a long time HAL Mariner and love the interesting forums, I wish they would stay on subject instead of always wondering off on other subjects!! Have a great day everyone!

Hal has to announce a smoking change but not actually do it for 5 years. This way anyone who has booked 5 years out can get a refund, and anyone who even thought about cruising can get a plate of chocolate covered strawberries sent to them Fed-Ex overnight

NCL has banned smoking today starting Nov.14. Got a msg on another thread! HAL needs to take steps now to implement it soon!

This is the official word that just came out this morning regarding Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Dear Lisa,

As the health and well–being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Norwegian’s complete smoking policy, can be found here.

What about smoking on the ship?

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Thanks for posting this, Lisa.

The pressure is definitely on HAL now.

It is inconceivable(to me) they will be adamant about being the sole cruise line in like category to continue with their current policy. IMO

I'm posting that question on Facebook and they don't like it one bit. I asked the question on Facebook when Carnival announced the ban. They told me I should contact guest relations. I did that but I haven't heard anything back not did I expect to. I'm pretty sure I'll be assigned the worst cabin on the ship for my November cruise:eek::D.

We are planning to book a cruise with HAL in 2016. It will be our first HAL cruise. Hopefully by then, they will have a no smoking on the balcony policy.

I can't believe you won't be safe by 2016.

But I also would have bet a lot of money that HAL would have banned balcony smoking before Carnival or NCL. I was wrong! :o

I think that HAL is probably the most conservative and "old school" of all mainstream lines, which can be good or bad depending on your point of view. So it looks like they will be the last to ban smoking on balconies, and my guess is the last to eventually ban it ship-wide.

If they make this change prior to our 11-2 cruise they are going to lose some 5 star mariners; unless they open up an indoor space for inclement weather and times when they are bunkering.

We only have a very short time until final payment is due.
