HopeO Posted October 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2014 My hubby and I will be cruising on the Adriatic dream cruise via Holland America. It begins in Rome and ends in Venice.Could someone please help me in finding the best deal in getting from the Venice port and back to the Rome airport? Thanks a lot. SuiteTraveler Posted October 24, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 24, 2014 You choices are drive (5 hours 24 minutes), take the train (4 to 5 hours on a high speed train) or fly (1 hour 5 minutes). Which do you prefer?
CruiserBruce Posted October 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2014 (edited) Suite Traveler has laid out some good options, but maybe a few more considerations are in order. From the place HAL docks, the train station is very close, walking distance if you don't have any mobility issues and don't mind lugging your bags. The airport is further away, requires the travel time, checkin time, etc. The high speed train is 3:30 to Rome, then connecting, and about 30 minutes to the airport. There is a lot of info on the Italy board, here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595 that could be helpful. Personally, I would take the train. Why not do a multi-city round trip air inbound to Rome and outbound from Venice routed back through Rome (if you can delay that return leg from Rome for the day(s) you want to spend there after disembarking Venice)? HopeO Posted October 25, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted October 25, 2014 Would you know how I would get from the train station to the airport?
CruiserBruce Posted October 25, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 25, 2014 Would you know how I would get from the train station to the airport? As suggested, look over on the Italy board. You can almost see the train station from the cruise terminal, although it is not a direct route. But it is easier to get to the train terminal than it is to the airport, again, if you don't have mobility issues.
Rare LHT28 Posted October 25, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 25, 2014 Just curious why do you need to get back to Rome? You can fly home from Venice ...unless of course you want extra time in Rome
SuiteTraveler Posted October 25, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2014 I was wondering if it might be more fun for the OP to drive from Venice to Rome stopping along the way at places like Bologna and Verona. Of course, these cities could also be visited by train if the OP wants to take a few extra days and see more of Italy.
Twickenham Posted October 25, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 25, 2014 Would you know how I would get from the train station to the airport? There's a direct train from Rome Termini to FCO. But, I would also look into flying home from VCE, or even Milan's MXP.
