fire onboard Insignia

Without a single detail of which deficiencies were found on which ships, this page is useless in helping a consumer factor safety records into their choice of cruise line or ship, so I don't find it in the least bit interesting (And most of the deficiencies were corrected immediately).

Whoa...a bit harsh there. Let up on the reigns a bit ....Would you know of any useful sites?

Wasn't there also a fire on Azamara's Quest and a Princess R ship (Ocean?)

Royal Princess (a sister to Insignia) had a similar engine room fire on June 18, 2009.

http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=3277

She was towed to Athens for repairs and was not back into service until July 7 2009, when we boarded her for her first cruise after repairs.

Yes to both,

30 March 2012 - A fire broke out in the engine room of the Azamara Quest. Power was temporary lost but restored the next day and the ship returned to port under its own power. The ship was out of service until 24 April 2012.

November 2011 - A generator on Ocean Princess caught fire with minor damage. The ship continued on its own power. Currently, the Ocean Princess is reported as being sold to Oceania for delivery in 2016.

Also,

18 June 2009 - Royal Princess experienced and engine room fire and was out of service until 09 July 2009.

There are 5 - 10 fires reported on cruise ships each year. There is a more complete list of ship fires at http://www.cruisejunkie.com/fires.html. Might need to pack a fire extinguisher.

I've been following this topic since I work in downtown Miami and can see the cruise port from my building. Reports say the Insignia will be towed to PR today for repairs but I wonder which Oceania ship is docked here at the RCCL building dock? The cruise calendar says it's the Insignia but we know that can't be and I don't have binoculars to be able to tell which ship it is from this high up.....just wondering. Check the Miami webcam.

Marina is scheduled for today

It is bigger than the R-class ships

+1, exactly my thought. First Bravo, looked out into hall and saw housekeeping going into drill mode.

The only way out was the same exit we used as passengers. They could have gone down a crew stairway....but the only way off was through the usual gates, so that story is debunked.

The actual muster...which took place after the second fire, crew was in full drill mode. Knocking on doors, sending people to the stations, with crew holding the boat numbers at the assigned muster stations. They took a cabin census, but soon realized that it didn't make sense, half the people were already off the ship. So they made announcement for the people holding the numbers to go to the dock. Then they told us to calmly exit the ship, taking cabin numbers At the exit. We stood at our muster number at the dock for a while...until we asked if we could go downtown.

I think reporting to muster stations was a good idea....rather than letting people make a mad dash for the exit. It was just an unusual muster with the ship being in port.

Just curious, did they have you take life vests to the muster? And were the muster stations outdoors? I have only been on 1 R-class ship, Ocean Princess, and Princes has indoor muster stations.

Thanks so much for your personal reports. Glad you are recovering. As an EMT/firefighter I have learned the stresses of emergencies, especially when there are fatalities. Be very, very kind to yourself.

Blesings to all affected by this tragedy. Maureen

Paulchili,

Are the Regatta and the Nautica different than the Insignia and the other three R-class ships you listed?

Peggy

All three of Oceania's R ships are identical excepting a few minor interior decorative details.

Regatta & Insignia may be most alike, because they were both built in 1998 as the R1 and the R2 of Renaissance Cruise Line (hence the R ship appellation).

Nautica, which was built as the R5 is two years younger.

Just spent some time on Marine Traffic web site and noted that:

Insignia is still docked in St. Lucia.

There is one tug, Boulder, off the coast of South America heading to St. Lucia at 12 knots. Due to arrive 1pm tomorrow.

Marine Traffic does not show any other ocean tugs heading to St. Lucia.

Thanks StanandJim,

I did know about the Renaissance designation. And I've been on the Regatta (and on the Riviera).

Are the Ocean & Royal Princess and Azamara Quest "R-4-6"? if I remember correctly, there were 8 R ships.

Peggy

R One = Insignia

R Two = Regatta

R Three = Pacific Princess

R Four = Ocean Princess

R Five = Nautica

R Six = Azamara Journey

R Seven = Azamara Quest

R Eight= Adonia (P&O Cruises)

That's not what happened on Quest. We could not get to our muster station, (the dining room) as it was full of smoke, nor could we get to our cabins to collect life jackets. They were handed out to us in the casino where we waited for an hour or so till the toxic fumes became too much and we were allowed to sit on the lounges in a confined area on deck just outside.

I was on Royal Princess the cruise before the fire and am booked on Insignia in July .... love the R ships but do I see a pattern forming of burst fuel lines which I believe was the cause of the Quest fire?

Did they make an announcement that your muster station was not accessible to go to the casino?? (indoors)

Usually during Muster Drill on the ships |I have been on they tell you if you cannot get back to your cabin or your muster station go to the lifeboats or listen for directions to safe areas

But then who listens at the drill to the person giving the instructions

No announcement was made but the crew directed us to the casino where a roll call was taken

See S&J's post on R ships.

Just to "muddy up the waters", the Ocean Princess (R3) started out as Tahitian Princess. Also, R8, which is now Adonia, was previously the Minerva II and the Royal Princess after the bankruptcy of Renaissance. Insignia was Columbus 2 for a couple of years with Hapag Loyd before returning as Insignia again and the Ocean Princess will become the Sirena.

Does this clarify things? :D:D

How many tugs will be required to move her?

I count 4 - Ocean & Royal Princess, Quest & Insignia.

I would hope that they will fix whatever the problem is (?fuel line) on the 4 other R ships before there is another fire.

The eight ex R ships are as follows:

Insignia

Nautica

Regatta all owned by Oceania

Ocean Princess

Pacific Princess owned by Princess/Carnival

Quest

Journey owned by Azamara/Celebrity

Adonia owned by P&O UK/Carnival

This used to be the Royal Princess up until 2011.

Our friends whom are booked on the Insignia to do the entire 180 day World Cruise received this today from Oceania:

Dear Valued Guests and Travel Professionals,

As you may be aware, on December 11th we experienced a tragic incident aboard Insignia while docked in St. Lucia. We currently have a technical team on board the vessel working with the ship’s officers and authorities to assess the situation. Once the authorities have completed their work, we expect Insignia to enter dry dock and undergo necessary repairs.

We are in the process of evaluating how long those repairs will take to complete and whether there will be any effect to scheduled January sailings, including the start of the Around the World cruise. We will have a better assessment on when the vessel will re-enter service by the middle of next week. We expect to have an update for you at that time.

Sincerely,

Crane Gladding

Senior Vice President, Passenger Services

Oceania Cruises

So at this stage, non of the passengers know any more than that.

Hello Jennie,

Thank you for that information.

I know that this is a stretch but if one goes by the information provided in post #278, it might be reasonable to assume that the Insignia will be ready for its inaugural world cruise. The repairs on 2 other R ships (Royal Princess and Quest), assuming that they were similar, took just under 1 month to repair.

Even though they are all R ships, the Insignia damage may or may not have been larger - we'll know by next week.

NB Both of those ships were able to sail under their own power, whereas Insignia cannot.

Happy trails to you Jennie,

Paul
