Onboard OBC?

I know that this has been the topic of many threads. However, I have not seen an answer to my question. Many have said that they have booked on board and then received an OBC that they could use on current cruise or future cruise.

If you use it on your current cruise and then later on cancel your future cruise, what happens?

Yes, if you book on board and want to use the new scheme, you give them your credit card and they put a charge on it in the amount of the deposit. They they give you that amount as on-board credit for the cruise you are on. If you cancel, the deposit you put on the credit card is non-refundable.

They will also book cruises using the previous method. In this one, you give your credit card for the deposit, there is no on-board credit for the cruise you are on, and if you cancel, you get the deposit back (US customers).

They will use the new scheme unless you tell them to do it the old way.

For British, Canadian, Australian and others, the offers vary.

If you take the OBC and later switch cruises your deposit can be transferred. The only way you lose it is to cancel.

We took the $300 OBC for our current cruise then went to the Casino and took the cash. Yes it cost $15 but we used the money to put towards our charge bill. Everything helps around Christmas. I was either that or let them keep our $300 for almost 2 years (booked for Dec 2016).

enjoy,

I'm trying to figure out why it would matter unless you already had so much OBC on your current cruise that you couldn't use that $200.

The way I see it $200 deposit is -$200 on your credit card and then + $200 towards current (or future ) cruise.

Either way you come out even if you cancel and $200 ahead if you sail.

Am I missing something?

Nothing to be confused about. I already had $850 OBC so I really didn't need more but why should I float Celebrity $300 for 2 years? I know it was not much but financially it is the best way to do it in my case. I am already ahead, I have the money and a $300 deposit on my cruise. Not sure why I would push it off. I'd rather have $285 today than $300 in 2 years.

Heck we usually take all (or most) our OBC through the casino as we can always get better shopping deals and better excursions in port. More than makes up for the 5% they change to get the money. So either way I would probably get charged the 5% if I waited and took the OBC on the future cruise.

enjoy,

Duane

What I'm confused about is the advantage/disadvantage of taking the credit now vs. on your future cruise.

We use the OBC to pay gratuities, upgrade the drink package and buy extra internet time.

I understand not floating Celebrity the money for 2 years but , other than that, is there any difference between taking it now or later?

The only advantage is I get to make a $300 deposit with their money, not mine. Again, no big deal because the value of loaning $300 for 2 years is not a lot :)

And I understand because having OBC seems like free money and in a way it is since you didn't really pay for it. But once it is OBC it is now your money so do with it what makes sense to you. We just prefer to use it off the ship.

enjoy,
