NEW POLICY - No More On Board Announcements!

The captains need to know that we really don't care about the longitude and latitude of the ship. Throw in some simple ship or port trivia instead!

I very much enjoy hearing the position, speed, heading, time of arrival at the next port, and weather.

I think I'd miss the Captain's noon announcements. I find that info interesting, but if they could put that info on the interactive TV, I can see how it would be less intrusive to others.

I would miss them too. Now, if they could only find a way to get everyone to shut up while he is making the announcement so that folks who want to hear it actually can.

As long as they don't get rid of the elevator voice " going up" deck 9

Oh and those days of the wk on the floor!

It's the simple things like that that make people wanna cruise over and over! I love the days of the week until halfway thru when I don't wanna look anymore cause I know the trip is wrapping up!

Like most cruisers, I never had any problem with Captain Speaking's announcements, whether morning, noon, or whatever. I love hearing about the longitude, the weather forecast, any nearby islands we're sailing around, when to reset our watches... :p

What I hated was the barrage of commercials - there I am enjoying the band on the pool deck, and they have to stop playing while we get, not just an announcement, but an infomercial telling us to go to the art auction, or Bingo, or the souvenir shop. And it was several times an hour. People, there are always activities going on or about to go on. Carry your compass with you. Mark it with a yellow highlighter. Write your favorites on your husband's arm.

Captain's announcements? I'm down with that. :D

Cruise Director's announcements? NO NO NO a thousand times no.

Thank God and Royal Caribbean for this change!

My favorite was the elevator (I think it was Splendour?) voice that said "Deck faw" in that English accent. I got fatter because of it, because I avoided the stairs in case I might miss somebody stopping on deck 4. :D

Great news!

On our recent Royal Princess cruise over new year that highly annoying Lisa Ball, one of the worst CDs we have ever experienced, would interrupt with a FULL run down of what was happening for the next few hours. After having to listen to her for 10 minutes I was ready to jump ship!

Can't anyone read???? Is that not what the Patter is for?

Well done, RCI. We won't miss the announcements one bit!

I hated the interruptions but I doubly hated that other than a few words like Bingo Bingo Bingo, much of what was said was usually unintelligible to me. A bunch of garbled blah blah blah and I was left wondering what the heck they said that was so important. If you are going to have someone read announcements, make sure they can enunciate clearly and have better quality speakers so its not just shredded noise.

On the Quantum, the Captain was on the RCL TV channel most afternoons. He gave us info on weather, course and various short information tours of the Bridge. The video was repeated every half hour or so for the rest of the afternoon. I thought it was much better than the attempt to communicate on the loudspeaker system we have heard in the past.

I agree, sounds like an excellent way communicate the noon announcement. Many times I miss part of the announcement because I have to open the stateroom door to hear it.

Some of us REALLY like to know where we are. Also the depth under the ship at that location and the nearest point of land could come in handy in an emergency ;):D

Captain Rob: "The depth of water directly under the ship is 16,763 feet.... and.... 2 inches & the nearest point of land is still Hawaii at 1,427 nautical miles due north - the sun will set tonight at sunset, and will rise again tomorrow at sunrise" :)

I agree. I like hearing what the captain has to say.

Some people care..I find that stuff interesting...

I always enjoy listening to the captains noon repot. Ever notice they never give us the sea height reports. Love to know how high they are. Will definitely miss the captain's daily info

I don't remember the captain's name but whenever I sailed with him, and we were on the eastern route in the middle of nowhere. He would give the ship position followed by....

"The closest land --- is right below us --- xx meters down to the ocean floor"

It always made me laugh and kinda nervous all at the same time.

Loved the captains announcements on Navigator last May. He had the best, happy greeting. Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning! and then a brief announcement.

My very first at-cruise morning was met with Captain Johnny's "Good morning, good morning, good morning..." I have to admit, I've looked forward to the captain's greeting and announcement ever since. I smile every time I hear it and know I'm on my cruise at last.

I think the regular daily announcement from the Captain or from the Bridge is appropriate onboard a ship. But yeah, won't miss the annoying sales pitches. Good move!

I'm largely in agreement with most here. However, I would be more tolerant of the increased announcements if their PA system was more selective in what zone they announce into. (Assuming they have the ability to break up their announcements into zones. I dont' mind all the anouncements when I'm on the pool deck. However, when getting ready for dinner, I've found myself opening the door to hear if announcements are important. I've found the existence of in cabin controls or their functionality to be pretty inconsistent. As far as I know I have never missed any emergency type announcements.

From Marc Walker this morning (on Facebook):

Morning everyone. So this news is definitely not exciting, and some of you may say 'what I waited all night for this??,' but it is breaking news in BingBong world.

As of next week there will be no more shipboard announcements fleet wide, except drills and emergencies.

Well put me on the list of folks who are very happy about this. I loathe the mind numbing bingo/art auction/jewelry sale/booze tasting/casino announcements that so cheapen the vacation by making it into a constant droning sales pitch.

Most of it is just regurgitating what's already posted around the ship and listed in the Compass. I can easily look at a Compass or ask someone if I actually care to attend.

I'll miss the interesting stuff, like the Captain's updates. But I'll live without it to be ever rid of the 95% of it that's pure bilge.

The lack of announcements and freely available pool towels were the two biggest things we liked about Celebrity. Royal has now rectified both of those issues, and I thank them for it!

Was on the Navigator last week. Never heard any bingo, art auction, ongoing(jewelry, liquor, $10 items) sale announcements. Captain's announcements were made of a morning and at noon.

I would hope that that will continue to be the case (will verify on our Quantum cruise next month). Definitely won't miss the bingo and art auction announcements but would miss the noon-time announcement by the Captains (even those that are almost impossible to understand due to a heavy accent;))
