Hotel in Reykjavik

Recommended Posts

We are currently booked for a Norwegian Fjord cruise which leaves out of Reykjavik. We are flying in 2 days early and we would like some recommendations for a hotel which is convenient to the port as well as to the sights. Also if there is a tour company you would recommend as well.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Tons of hotels in Reykjavik in all price ranges, we've stayed in 3 of them and have been pleased by each.

The two "must do" tours are the Blue Lagoon (book in advance, as they have been selling out) which is an easy stop en route to or from the airport (airport is 45 minutes from the city, BL is 15 minutes from the airport). There are very regularly scheduled buses that do the Airport --> BL --> Reykjavik route (and the reverse) for a much better price than you can do in a taxi, and the Golden Circle.

We used Dave at http://www.icelandhorizon.is for our Golden Circle tour as we found that for the same price as a huge tourbus, we could do the trip in a minibus, with only about a dozen passengers. Much more nimble and much more personal service this way.

I'll recommend to rent a car at the airport and leave it at the Cruise terminal. Price for Transfer from airport to hotel and excursions might be higher price.

Some hotels I have stayed at are: Radisson Blu Saga Hotel, Hilton Reykjavik Nordica, Icelandair Reykjavik Natura, Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel, and Alda Hotel Reykjavík.

Must are Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle, The three primary stops on the Golden Circle route are the national park Þingvellir, the waterfall Gullfos and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, with the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Easy to do by car.

We will be in Reykjavik for 2 days prior to our cruise in May. We've booked a private tour (there are 8 of us) thru Geoecco. They've been very easy to work with to customize what will work for our multigenerational group.

They recommended this blog: http://www.iheartreykjavik.net for info about the area and Iceland in general. Lots of very good information there. There's a video that shows snow in May. Yikes! That's scary for this Texas girl.

We are staying at the Reykjavik Residence Hotel. Haven't been there yet, so can't give you BTDT yet, but it came highly rated on TripAdvisor and because we rented the 3 bedroom apartment for the 8 of us, came out half the price what would have been 4 hotel rooms. It is also one block off of the main street down town - easy access but not quite as loud as on the main strip. The rooms for 2 people were not cheap, but not the highest I'd found.

Sorry I have not read the other responses. We avoided hotels and stayed at The Castle House Apartments - fabulous accommodation. Close to the centre of Reykjavik and very easy to find everything you need. Lots of tours with Greyline who are and excellent service provider.
