Working 2 Cruise Posted May 22, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2015 Does anyone know how much it costs to book the Sanctuary for Glacier Bay? It's our first cruise to Alaska... Would the Sanctuary be the best place for viewing? I'm incredibly excited about seeing Alaska, especially since we've done Mexico and Hawaii so many times! Any other tips would be great! Thanks! Rare Coral Posted May 23, 2015 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2015 I prefer Deck 7 and it is free. I think the lower decks give a better perspective.
CruiserBruce Posted May 23, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 23, 2015 I believe a search of the board would reveal the rate is $40 for a full day, $20 for a half day, fleetwide.
Rare Coral Posted May 23, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 23, 2015 I believe a search of the board would reveal the rate is $40 for a full day, $20 for a half day, fleetwide. It is usually higher on Glacier Bay day.
Cruise Junky Posted May 23, 2015 #5 Share Posted May 23, 2015 I wouldn't do it. There are better viewing areas for free
Working 2 Cruise Posted May 23, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted May 23, 2015 Thanks Coral, I will follow your advice. Free is always better. CruiserBruce, I can't search on my Kindle. I know there's a specific amount for The Sanctuary in Glacier Bay, not the usual fees.
Astro Flyer Posted May 23, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 23, 2015 (edited) Nina...I checked my 7 day b2b Alaska cruises from 2013 but there's no mention about how much extra it costs for the Sanctuary in Glacier Bay. I seem to recall a post possibly by Pam in CA about the additional cost & the extras you get included with it. The Patter for both of our days in Glacier Bay said that they do not schedule any events or activities nor do they make any announcements (except for the Rangers) and the Casino is closed to "enjoy this pristine natural wonder" Edited May 23, 2015 by Astro Flyer
Working 2 Cruise Posted May 23, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted May 23, 2015 Aloha Frank! I'm so thrilled to be going to Alaska! Better yet, it's only 36 days away! We did get a smoking deal! However, we can only do one excursion... I'm looking at the Wilderness ... with the Crab Feast... in Ketchikan. with Norman, I couldn't do a hiking excursion... besides, he doesn't want to see bears up close! On the other hand, he wasn't happy about Alaska in the first place! This one's truly for me. Going to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, with a visit to Tracy's.... Mahalo! ginnstars Posted May 23, 2015 #9 Share Posted May 23, 2015 When I did the coral in 2013 they wanted $60 for the day. IMO you will get more from your balcony or even the lido deck. It's ALL day and it does get cold out there. It was even worse for us as it was raining too.

That'll be a great cruise & happy that both of you will get to experience Alaska. Alaska is a destination we've repeatedly enjoyed because there is so much beauty to experience in the ever changing scenery. If you are not aware of it at Margerie Glacier the captain slowly rotates the ship 360° so every location on the ship gets a view. :) We enjoyed Tracy's in Juneau (not cheap) & it's located between the main street & the waterfront. Two years ago around Memorial Day we got a great email offer for our 7 day b2b cruises round-trip from Vancouver. The cruise was on the Coral from mid July to the end of July and it would be great to receive a similar offer for this summer. Buon Viaggio...it's only 5 weeks from tomorrow. :D Edited May 23, 2015 by Astro Flyer

I can't tell you exactly what the Sanctuary cost but whatever it is... it's way too much... the best viewing area (in our opinion) is off your balcony or if you don't have a balcony any one of the open decks. The cost is free and the Captain will turn the ship completely around so you don't miss any of the beautiful views... and the views are incredible!! As for our one tip... if you like crab or want to experience the very best in Alaskan Crab... it's Tracy's.... unbelievably great!!
Working 2 Cruise Posted May 23, 2015 Author #12 Share Posted May 23, 2015 I think I'll stick with the Promenade and Lido decks.... I figured it's going to be very cold... Nothing a good cup of hot coffee, a hat and gloves won't cure! Thanks Frank! Thanks everyone!

The best tour we had on our entire cruise came in Ketchikan... and we almost didn't do it. We looked at everything in Ketchikan and really didn't see anything we thought we couldn't see in other ports or held an interest for us (like up close bears)... at the last minute we purchased tickets for the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour. We thought it would be cheesy... were we ever wrong... it was fantastic.... the crew did a great job of entertaining us and being able to see and HOLD some of the sea life around the area was great. While holding a king crab as big as my wife's armspand was amazing... it was the bald eagle stop that was unbelievable... there were hundreds of eagles and they weren't a thousand yards away they flew within ten feet of you... the entire tour was one highlight after another... as I said it was the best tour we took on the cruise!! (Now if you're doing the cruisetour.... landing and walking on a glacier was a once in a lifetime experience)
laughing husky Posted May 23, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 23, 2015 My opinion only.....I found the sanctuary to be windy, wet and cold.....and there was no place to get out of the rain. My sister insisted that we book it for that day......very bad idea.....since then, I have just gone from deck to deck, and if it is icy cold outside, i go topside, find a bar and look out the window....:) I live here....and sometimes it can be icy cold, even in July and sometimes it can be glorious......
