The Wake Show with Lisa Ball and Paul Chandler-Burns

We have been lucky enough to sail with Kelvin Joy who has had us in stitches watching the Wake Show. I'm wondering whether it is always a good show or if it is very Cruise Director dependent. In August we will be sailing with Lisa Ball and then Paul Chandler-Burns. Do all Wake Shows have competitions and messages from passengers or is that just a Kelvin Joy format. He also uses music really well too.

Kelvin and Deputy CD Adam were a hoot on our Emerald cruise in April of 2014!! We're very happy that he's on our upcoming Crown cruise.

I don't think you'll find Lisa quite as entertaining on The Wake Show although I think she's a very good CD in general. We've sailed with her at least 3 times.

Paul was the CD on our CB cruise this past April. He along with Deputy CD Corey were also very funny, especially on The Wake Show (although Kelvin sets the bar quite high :D). He was also very funny emceeing the Marriage Game show in the Princess Theater (I don't believe I have the correct name, but you probably know what I mean ;)).

All The Wake Shows I've seen have had competitions and passenger messages.

Have Great Cruises!!

I think Lisa was on our first ever cruise in 2010 on Crown Princess. She seemed a bit dull if I'm honest but maybe she has improved? :o I'm really pleased to hear that Paul is good as that will be with the whole family and I don't want Rob being underwhelmed. You are certainly right about Kelvin setting the bar high, as he is now the person we compare all our Cruise Directors with across all lines.

Lately, a lot of the wake shows are more of an advertisement for the various departments on board the ship (for you to spend money).

We have sailed with Kelvin in 2012 and will be sailing with him again soon. I hope he continues with the format that he did so brilliantly in the past.

Lisa Ball has really improved as a cruise director. She was the CD on the Royal last September. Very friendly and funny lady. Loved her.

It is definitely CD dependent. We did a 15 day SF / Hawaii cruise where the CD was J J Ulrich. We gave up on the Wake Show very quickly. The first day I asked him about the trivia forms since they weren't where they "belonged". He said, "Oh, those. I don't do trivia so I had the forms removed." I'm pretty sure he also had his sense of humor and his personality surgically removed as well. What a totally boring CD. I hope we never sail with him again.

Going against what most have said, but personally I am not keen on Kelvin Joy at all, I find his humour a bit too "holiday camp" for my taste. That said he runs a good team and good events, it's just I prefer the ones he isn't actually hosting.

Lisa Ball is great one of my favourite Cruise Directors, as already said, a lovely lady.

I really look forward to The Wake Show, it's part of my cruise routine, with the question of the day :) the only CD I couldn't face watching every morning was Billy London, not sure why, I just didn't enjoy it.

If high brow humor is your cup of tea, than Kelvin is definitely not your man. :D:D

The prize for winning a wake-show trivia question is now totally worthless.

They used to give prizes such as a free cocktail, but on the last two ships I have been on the prize is a free play on the casino machine where you try to poke some money down by aiming the rod exactly.

Great news that Lisa Ball has improved. Our cruise on Royal is extremely port intensive but we love to watch a bit of the Wake Show in the morning it is one of the aspects that sets Princess apart from other lines.

The wake show program is a complete waste of time and nothing more than an advertizement to buy, buy, buy. Most people have better things to do with their time than watch it.

If they really wanted people to make an interesting show they could incorporate some useful information about the ports you're going to visit with helpful hints and they could actually give away 1 decent prize each day instead of a pen, key chain or a few dollars for the rip off casino cash vault machine.

As with everything it won't please everyone but I think the playful nature is part of the charm. It is also very much a family show and a firm favourite with my two children.

The Wake show was more enjoyable in the past when it was not interrupted multiple times for ads about Princess.

"The Helpful Hints" on ports are offered by a professional Port lecturer and are repeated daily on a specific TV station.

I wouldn't want or expect that on The Wake Show.

You certainly won't get anything that helpful on the wake show unless you consider a bartender describing some drinks, having someone read me the Patter or the spa people pitching their massage treatments.

The format of the show could actually be helpful if they wanted it to be but like I said it's turned in one big commercial as has the repeaters party.

Oh and btw the Port lecturer hardly gives much of any helpful hints about ports unless it benefits their selling of the tours.

Fortunately there are multiple channels and multiple cruise lines. ;)

I totally agree. He's is absolutely the worst CD we have ever had the displeasure to cruise with.

You obviously meant to add IMHO to the end of your post but forgot to as it certainly isn't the opinion of many on here including myself. We like to listen to the wake show in the morning and I admit some are better than others. Kelvin still stands out as the best that I have encountered.

Some CD's don't solicit any passenger input which in my mind is a mistake. We like to frequently take a guess at the answer and always include some observation of a fine job done by some crew member or department along with our guess. Some CD's make a point of doing the show from a different part of the ship each day, frequently from behind the scenes which we enjoy.

I'd venture to say the audience is probably less than 10% of the people on the ship with most of them being newbies with the latest thing is blasting the show on MUTS in the early morning. LOL. :D

Some CD's are just less boring. ;) Obviously the show isn't meant for everyone.

It really depends on the CD and if you like that CD, IMO. I was just on the Crown Princess with Kelvin Joy and he's a good CD...maybe a bit manic and over the top, but I liked his energy. I really think the Richard Joseph and Dave Cole do a good Wake Show. It is true, though, that the Wake Show is more and more becoming one long commercial with a little info thrown in here and there. That's a loss. I don't watch it much anymore.

As for the OP questions, I don't think I've sailed with Lisa Ball, but I know a lot of people seem to like her.

I learn so much from everyone here. I didn't watch the Wake Show because I thought it was an exercise program, LOL!

My favorite was when one CD did it in an elevator. They often showed the surprised expressions on people waiting for an elevator when the doors would open.
