Tishybabe Posted June 30, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 30, 2015 Hi guys. We are going on our first cruise in August and having an overnight in Venice and thinking about meeting some friends that live nearby for dinner. My question is what time do you have to be back on the ship at night if it stays overnight? Thanks
Merion_Mom Posted June 30, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 30, 2015 You can come and go as you please. 24/7. (well, as long as the ship is docked!) You can spend the night off the ship if you want.
Sitzmark Posted June 30, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 30, 2015 I suppose it might depend on the port, but I would assume a half hour or so before the ship departs.
Tishybabe Posted June 30, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted June 30, 2015 Thanks guys. Was thinking maybe we had to come back by a certain time. Sound like a plan!
Rare BillOh Posted June 30, 2015 #5 Share Posted June 30, 2015 Thanks guys. Was thinking maybe we had to come back by a certain time. Sound like a plan! Always listen to the ship's announcements the night before and arrival day in case plans change.
Kowhai17 Posted June 30, 2015 #6 Share Posted June 30, 2015 I did a cruise in April that overnighted in San Francisco. Seemed like most passengers were back on board by midnight, but there were no time restrictions. Definitely check the daily newsletter and listen for announcements to be sure. And in SF, we drove down to Monterey and stayed overnight in Santa Clara! Had a blast.
Merion_Mom Posted June 30, 2015 #8 Share Posted June 30, 2015 pppppppppppsssssssssssssssssttttttttttttttttttttttttt. Here's a little secret. Coming back in the middle of the night can be the perfect time to smuggle on some booze. Not that I would know anything about that....................... ;)
Hoopster95 Posted June 30, 2015 #9 Share Posted June 30, 2015 Hi guys. We are going on our first cruise in August and having an overnight in Venice Overnighted in Venice last year, got back to the ship around 11pm no problem. We also arrived in Dubrovnik at 8pm (missed Split due to bad tendering conditions)... stayed out til 4am no problem, gangway open and staffed 24/7. Have a great cruise! :D Coming back in the middle of the night can be the perfect time to ..... Oooh! Gotta remember this one for next time :p
OCruisers Posted June 30, 2015 #10 Share Posted June 30, 2015 (edited) We've only done this once. While we came back to the ship that night, we didn't have to be back until the next day 30 minutes before sailing time. BND Posted June 30, 2015 #11 Share Posted June 30, 2015 We've stayed overnight in several ports (Bermuda and Nassau in particular) and a lot of people stay out really late and even spend the night off the ship sometimes. Think of the ship as a hotel.
cruisegirl1 Posted June 30, 2015 #12 Share Posted June 30, 2015 In our experience, there is little or no entertainment scheduled for when a ship overnights in port, as they assume many will be off the ship. Also - the casino (and often the shops) will be closed. On our last cruise, we had a our last two nights in Istanbul. We used the ship as a hotel and returned to the ship, although after midnight. Many passengers did their final disembarkation the first day we were in port. M
Retired LEO Posted June 30, 2015 #13 Share Posted June 30, 2015 The ship is the same as a hotel. The only difference is on the ship you have to check in and out each time where as in a hotel you just wave at the desk clerk each time.
Virtopia Posted July 1, 2015 #14 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I'd love to try this one day. My upcoming cruise goes to Aruba and stays there until 11pm. It's a nice change from the 6pm I'm accustomed to and we'll be enjoying dinner and a bit of night life off the ship.
Rare markeb Posted July 1, 2015 #15 Share Posted July 1, 2015 I don't remember if there were time restrictions in St Petersburg when we were there, but you cleared Russian immigration on and off the ship each time. If they had hours, that would have limited our ability to return to the ship!

Not too many people want to stay late in Nassau, though. ;) :D

Formal night should have been the next day when you had to be back on the ship by 3.
How'sBartCruisin'? Posted July 1, 2015 #18 Share Posted July 1, 2015 We docked overnight in Bermuda in 2012 and will be doing it again next summer. I loved watching the shooting stars and the lit up island, listening to the island sounds and being slowly rocked to sleep.

spookwife Posted July 1, 2015 #20 Share Posted July 1, 2015 Hi guys. We are going on our first cruise in August and having an overnight in Venice and thinking about meeting some friends that live nearby for dinner. My question is what time do you have to be back on the ship at night if it stays overnight? Thanks the gangway is manned 24/7. you could get off on day one and not come back until time to get ready to leave on Day 2, 3 etc. many do exactly that. Sitzmark Posted July 1, 2015 #21 Share Posted July 1, 2015 The OP was talking about a ship that is there overnight... and of course is not departing. I naturally assumed that at some point after the overnight visit it would depart and that passengers should be back onboard before that time. If it never departs then it sounds like it's cruising days are over.
cruisePAC Posted July 1, 2015 #22 Share Posted July 1, 2015 We did this last July and I had the same question prior to cruising. When you stay overnight in Venice, the gangway is staffed throughout the night. However, the tram from the cruise port to Piazzale Roma stops operating at 11pm. We saw some people walking along the road instead of taking the tram, but I'm not sure what the traffic conditions and sidewalk is like.
Rare WrittenOnYourHeart Posted July 1, 2015 #23 Share Posted July 1, 2015 My one time in Nassau that we stayed late it was formal night, which made no sense at all. Formal night should have been the next day when you had to be back on the ship by 3. That actually seems like it would be the ideal solution - those who want to do formal night can go back to the ship and those who don't can stay and party in Nassau. :)
