What is appropriate to tip the Concierge at the end of the cruise?

We gave ours $100. He did everything for us. We told him what excursions we wanted and dinner plans, show plans, everything. Beats waiting on line at excursion desk. He got us over the water cabana on Laberdee. Took us off ship first when we returned to Bayonne.

magic man - you are indeed the man to the concierge. Just curious and please don't take offense. You can tell me none of my business and I won't be offended. For that generosity, what requests do you have for them? Because I would have some! Don't get me wrong - we generally tip between $50-100 based on our requests but other than an occasional spa appontment, dinner reservation and one cabana request - we're really zero maintenance. I applaud your generosity but I confess I am curious if you get "more bang for your buck."

Yes I do, He will escort me off the ship in every port and for any time dining will walk me to the main dining room to avoid lines. I always seems to get the time I want for the specailty dining. I have had some butlers on other lines and got use to the service.

How much do the concierges make anyway? And if I never enter the lounge(I am always in a suite) am I still obliged to tip them and why?

There is no compulsory tip to the concierge for suite guests. There are for the cabin steward, dining room server, assistant server and head waiter, but not for the concierge. If you never step foot in the lounge and never ask anything of the concierge, then don't worry about tipping him or her.

I never know what to tip the concierge as we never ask any thing of any of them, I can do my own reservations, etc. If they are friendly and at least say hello once or twice, I will tip but for the few that have barely acknowledged us, I did not tip much. For the one that pretty much sneered at us, I gave nothing.:D We do tip the waiters well.

Does anyone know if the concierge gets a decent salary ?

Don't know first hand but a little research shows that RCCL bartender rcve approx 1800 a month in salary and a bar manager is 2100.

Current job posting for RCCL Concierge does not show salary but requires

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, business administration or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred.

Minimum of two years hospitality management experience in an upscale hotel, resort or cruise line (shipboard experience preferred).

Basic computer software skills required.

All international applicants must have the ability to obtain C1/D visa (and other relevant visas) when applicable

Must meet all physical requirements, including the ability to participate in emergency life-saving drills and required training

Based on that i would say pay is at least equivalent to Bar Manager plus tips of, at least based on what i see posted, another 200 to 1000 per week.

All money referenced herein USD

First off let me say thank you for starting this thread. It's not often that you can get feedback and input on what dollar amounts were "the norm" for tipping concierge.

In the past I have tipped 20-50 for the Diamond concierge and per drink for bar tender. We never asked or received any assistance other than usage of the diamond lounge.

Our next trip will be in a suite using Conierge so I will be tipping him/her also.

WOW, that was very nice.

If I had been given such a nice exception to the rules I might not want to spread the specifics around, as it might get the concierge in trouble.

On a different ship, (and because I've read stories like yours) I asked to have my adult daughter cabin mate ( who is Diamond) join me (I am D+) in the CL to have a soda ( she is not a drinker) and was given a huge loud NO, Mrs. XXXX, that is NOT ALLOWED! He made sure the few in the room heard. I peaked in a few times and the lounge was practically empty. We were happy to spend some time in the DL and tipped generously.

More recently, we simply have a drink in a bar using a voucher and rarely use the lounge in the evening. I might go in during the morning for coffee and some continental breakfast. I can go a week and never see the concierge and may never ask for any service or assistance. If that is the case, we still give a small tip at the end of the cruise, I guess my rationalization is that he/she is taking care of running the lounge. We always tipped the CL/DL servers per drink (at the time we are provided the drink) and do the same at the ship bars if we use a voucher.

enjoy

Hopefully his superiors won't read these posts, but we will be on Freedom in a few weeks and expect to see him there ! I can't believe how you were treated trying to get your daughter in ! I know what we did was against the rules which is why we asked permission first.

Based on the job requirements posted above, I'd bet the concierge on an RCCL ship makes about what a good (Marriott level) hotel concierge makes. That's in the 30K-$40K range. I don't let this affect my tip. I base that on the level of service I receive.

I asked this question in a different thread but this seems a more appropriate spot. If you eat breakfast in Chops as part of being a suite guest do you tip there as well or is it part of the regular dining tip? Thanks for any input!

My wife should have been a CPA. She will know how many drinks we had in the CL during the seven day cruise, what the going price is in the other bar venues and how much gratuity is added to the bar drinks. If automatic gratuity is 18 per cent at the other bars, that is what we give the CL bartenders on the last night of the cruise.

We have always been pleased with the services in the CL and we do not b feel the need to tip in advance or by the drink to try to get some sort of advantage over the other guests

I tip the servers in Chops on the last day. They do such a great

job and learn your habits very early in the cruise. I'm not sure

if others tip but I like to show my appreciation for the great service

all week.

Thanks for your input! We only went to Chops for breakfast once on our last cruise but I think we may go more this time. Thanks again!

Breakfast in Chops is like an Oasis compared to the chaotic

Windjammer. It's a great Suite/Pinnacle perk. I like to go

to dinner there the first night and introduce ourselves to our

waiter. The next time you come in they often call you by name

and more often than not your same waiter from the evening

will take care of you. By the last day they sort of know your

routine ( what time you come, where you want to sit, how many

are in your party, whether you want coffee or not, etc.) By

the end of the week we have become friends and I am truly

sad to say my goodbyes. If someone has made an effort to

personalize my experience ( call me by name, know my

husband needs tobacco, etc) I for sure show my appreciation

with some cash. That has been my experience, your mileage

may vary.

Unfortunately breakfast in CHOPS or a Gold Card area in the MDR for breakfast/sea day lunch are not available on every ship for Suites/Pinnacles. I wish it were a Gold Card perk. We spent 33 days on Radiance in Feb/March and we'd loved to have had an option for breakfast in CHOPS or a special area in the MDR for breakfast and lunch on a sea day.

We did have a special area on deck 5 of the MDR on Legend of the Seas for b2b2b cruises in 2014. We had the same waiters every day and definitely showed our appreciation at the end of each cruise .

The waiters in the CL will definitely get the bulk of our tips on the last night of the cruise. Unlike others, we have found that they remain the same for the entire cruise and they are almost always wonderful in their service.

We really don't use the concierge for very much, but we certainly tip if they are pleasant and welcoming. We have experienced a couple of concierges who were full of themselves and extensively focused on a limited number of guests. Nope, no tips there and no guilt as well!

  • 1 year later...

Keep in mind if you are in a suite, RCCL gets the premium for that suite, not sure staff sees much of that. If you can afford a suite, you can afford to tip as appropriate for services that deserve tipping. Also if you don't get that level of service no tip.
