sweetlife Posted September 27, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2015 My mom is a devout Catholic. Goes to Mass daily. We are sending her on a cruise next week - - and I can already tell she is having issues with the possibility she won't be going to Mass on Sunday (ship leaves Saturday). Any chance there is Sunday Mass on board? Or a priest? Any way to find out if a Priest is on board? Thanks.
RubyGold Posted September 27, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2015 There are no priests on the ship. But they will hold a service if there is a volunteer priest on vacation who is fully accredited and has a letter of recommendation. Although you will have a hard time finding out ahead of the cruise. Some ships do have a multi faith chapel, or will designate an area as such if interest is received.
ready2cruzagain Posted September 27, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2015 There is no Sunday mass and no priest that I have seen in years on Carnival.
Rare Tapi Posted September 27, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) No priests on Carnival ships, except if one is traveling and volunteers his time to officiate a mass or religious service. Of all the years I've been cruising on Carnival, I've only seen it once, back in 2008. Will your mom's ship be in port on Sunday? If so, it may be worth looking at local masses ashore. If having mass onboard is a necessity for your mom, consider booking her on Holland America next time. They are one of the few cruise lines with a dedicated priest onboard on all of their ships and they hold Catholic mass on a daily basis. I don't know for sure, but I believe that Celebrity is another cruise line with priests onboard. Edited September 27, 2015 by Tapi
love my grandkids Posted September 27, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2015 Carnival doesnt do much of anything for religious services for any faith. Your pretty much on your own.
Drazil65 Posted September 27, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 27, 2015 (edited) Carnival is in the travel/vacation business not the religion business, she should inquire if there will perhaps be one on cruise that they know of once she boards. If not, she should bring her prayer book of choice and arrange some quiet time for herself. Or if she has computer she can maybe stream a mass to look at. Although we travel mostly with RCCL, we like having a priest on board when we travel on HAL.
Jana60 Posted September 27, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 27, 2015 She may not find mass on board but she will be able to attend Mass in pretty much every port that a cruise ship would go to especially if the port is in South America, Mexico or Europe. Smiling Cruiser Posted September 27, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 27, 2015 She will probably feel better if she gets a dispensation from her parish priest. Easy to do.
riffatsea Posted September 27, 2015 #10 Share Posted September 27, 2015 If one goes on a land vacation one does not expect the hotel to hold religious services. The ship is like a hotel. I'd expect folks who want services to either find them on shore or perhaps bring along their favorite priest, minister etc.

PittsburghGirlee Posted September 27, 2015 #12 Share Posted September 27, 2015 Tell your Mom to go to the chapel and have some alone time and pray. It is not the same as a full Catholic mass, but saying the rosary in a chapel setting may make her feel better. I know it did me. Also, as others have posted, there are ports that have churches that she may be able to attend a mass. Good luck.....prayers are heard everywhere :)
bigblue82 Posted September 28, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 28, 2015 Usually no priest on board. I have only attended mass once on board, at Christmas. Only because a priest was on board. Have her find churches while in port. You can go to masstimes dot org to find churches.
BallFour4 Posted September 28, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 28, 2015 We had a very nice priest cruise with us on the Freedom a few weeks ago. He elected to remain under the radar. We met him on the bike ride in Freeport. Nice guy.

Havingfun2010 Posted September 28, 2015 #16 Share Posted September 28, 2015 According to Catholic rules, you have an obligation to attend (in person) church services. However, exceptions are made for many reasons including age, weather, caring for sick child. While on vacation, efforts should be made to fulfill the obligation but if you are far from a church, can't find a church, or you could not find a church than your obligation is waived. The best action, is to talk to your church, explain it and if there is a service on board, attend it.
joeyjpaul Posted September 28, 2015 #17 Share Posted September 28, 2015 This is part of the reason that we are doing a Sunday to Sunday cruise. I'm just starting to look at mass times as we drive to and from the port of Baltimore.

Rare Tapi Posted September 28, 2015 #19 Share Posted September 28, 2015 Huh, while I had heard that of HAL, I had not heard of it of Celebrity. Thanks I did a bit more research and it seems like Celebrity discontinued the practice of having a priest onboard for all sailings a few years back. Instead, they provide priests just for major holidays.

Others do for major holidays and perhaps World Cruises, but as far as I know these ships and HAL are the only ones who do it regularly. Perez1992 Posted September 28, 2015 #22 Share Posted September 28, 2015 What about downloading some sermons and worship music for her and her bible so she can have some private time with God but still have a great time exploring the ocean God has created [emoji4][emoji6][emoji7]
Perez1992 Posted September 28, 2015 #23 Share Posted September 28, 2015 Also can she look into visiting mass in port anywhere ? That might be an idea to look into nearby churches in the port cities !
