Will RCCL ever build a bigger ship than an Oasis class ship?

Recommended Posts

I forget what ship we were on, but I believe it was the Freedom. The Captain told us the Coast Guard would not allow any larger ships to port in the US so RC would not be building above the Oasis class. He said that any larger amount of passengers would pose problems with evacuation.

Would love to see some new builds of the Radiance class size with some new amenities, but keep the glass centrum instead of a promenade. Don't need a shopping mall at sea.

I like the shopping mall at sea.

Unfortunately it's only good for an hour or so of intrigue. Maybe what they need is a "home shopping channel" at sea instead. :D

I wouldn't be surprised, but this will be the progression:

1) RCCL buys 2-6 more private Isl. / Private ports

2) RCCL starts offering "exclusive" itineraries that go to these private ports which all offer unlimited food/drink (they might charge a fee per day)

3) RCCL will build a ship bigger than the oasis class ships.

4) Slowly, RCCL will reduce the number of non-affiliated ports that any itinerary visits down to one or two.

You'll note that 4 will be the justification for doing 1, 2, and 3.

I don't think #3 will happen, but 1,2, and 4 most definitely, not just by RCCL but by all cruise lines that want to compete in the Caribbean. I would add an item #0 to your list though, build a dock at Coco Cay.

Just build a new island. China is getting good at that

There was discussion on another thread about some type of cable car to unload passengers in GC

Yeah... I'm imagining trying to disembark 4500 passengers using 4 person gondolas. Not liking that idea so much...

On the other hand, Grand Cayman requires the use of runners anyway, so What's the difference?

You obviously have no vision, what's a runner

Not sure that is entirely correct. The USCG cannot impose any stricter rules over foreign flag ships above what the IMO requires under SOLAS and other international rules. So long as SOLAS does not limit the number of passengers, and the ships meet SOLAS requirements and the classification societies' standards under the ISM for emergencies and evacuation, there is no reason the ships can't get larger.

While the USCG has jurisdiction over port facilities for security purposes, they do not have any jurisdiction over safety in those port facilities. This belongs with the state, municipality, and OSHA. And provided the design of the port facility allowed for adequate evacuation of the passengers, I don't believe there is any statute limiting the number of passengers on a ship. There may be local ordinances about this, I don't know, and the crew of foreign flag ships tend to clump all US regulations under the umbrella of the USCG whether the CG is responsible or not.

Something I learned a long time ago. Don't always believe the Captain.

I personally hope not.

We did enjoy our cruise on Allure awhile back, but we enjoyed our cruise on Indy more. We have cruised on Freedom and Voyager class ships and returning to Navigator again shortly, those to me are wonderful size ships.

We are going on Harmony in 2017, but the 'waterslides' are the draw, not the size of the ship. We booked a cabin that overlooks the Aquatheater, which will give us a little view of the ocean, without having an Ocean View balcony itself. When we sailed on Allure, we had a balcony overlooking Central Park. We enjoyed the difference from an ocean view balcony, but missed seeing the ocean. Hoping this cabin, is a good compromise.

Why would you hope not. The ships you enjoy would still be available

It is my personal opinion because bigger than Oasis class to me is not better. It probably will be limited in port availability that it can access and the Oasis class already has a huge number of passengers to accommodate and doing it well is difficult enough.

Never say never. However, as the Oasis class ships are limited in where they can go? It is unlikely.

This is largely what I was going to say, but I probably would have said, there has to be more ports available that can take the ship as the 3 that will be in service next year will have them covered. I've heard, but have no personal experience or knowledge that some of the China cruises are mainly centered around gambling, so I wouldn't be totally surprised is a ship like that ends there, or RC starts building a specific Casino of the Seas.

But how would a bigger ship personally affect you?

But yes, I can see a super size cruise ship with only 1-3 ports. There would/could be so much to do on board, that it would be much like a all inclusive resort. I think we will see one sooner than we think. A lot of other items, like maintenance and where/who could or would build such a monster. Also it must operate much like present ships and be able to run from hurricanes and react other emergency issues.
