Skipping of Half Moon Cay possible?

In my opinion, if they are going to skip HMC for the day, then you will most likely have a sea day. It is not in the carnival's best interest to take you to another port in the Bahamas. Carnival owns HMC and receives all the revenue derived on the Island. If they are gong to skip the island and loose the revenue, they would rather make it up by keeping the bars and casino open and the dollars pouring in.

when they cancelled hmc last month, they sub Freeport for it. hate that place got there at 9 am and left at 1 pm. I wished that they would have had a sea day!!:(

If you don't mind, do you remember the conditions of Half moon cay? What the weather report or anything read? Just curious

Thank you, I appreciate it. I just looking for a best educated quess if the frequent cruisers think we will be skipping it. Just have no clue what 25mph winds mean in the Carribean and the fact that its Easterly matters. Ive heard this is everyones favorite port, so full of hope here.

we was on the fascination oct.10th to the 15th. the weather was very sunny and the temp was nice. the wind was blowing into the bay and it was very choppy.:)

The Captain's job is the safety of his guests and crew. As to weather, if you are looking at weather.com, you are wasting your time. For accurate marine forecasts try windguru or crownweather. As a Captain I can tell you its all about the sea state or north swells. North swells can make anchorages untenable. If they can not comfortably get the tenders to the docks, which in a swell can be very dangerous, the ship will leave.

If windguru is a good place to look, then it's incredibly bad news for sun lovers. Each port of call has 100% cloud cover all day. Except Grand Turk, which ranges from 100% to 89% cloud cover throughout the day. While that's not rain, to a sun lover that's just as bad. Oh well, hope there's a lot of great activities on the boat for the sea days...

I would be lying if I said 100% cloud cover didn't completely bum me out... #firstworldproblems #stillavacation

The real situation is that they may not be able to get any kind of openings at another port that they can get to in a reasonable time. Plus there would be no way to have any excursions available to offer to the passengers in a different port. The most logical solution is a day at sea. To imply that revenue is the "ulterior motive" shows you have a lack of true business sense and customer care. But nice try.

Its not me that has to worry about Seasick pills, my gf, gets motionsickness, but she is bringing on a bunch of Seasick Patches and pill also to avoid it. So she should be okay. Looks to be a crappy weather week, but lets make the best out of it! What time you plan to try and get there? I heard we usually board about 1100-1130,

I have been on cruises where is has rained every day. In one situation it rained all day in Grand Cayman and totaled 12 inches of water. Every time we donned our Carnival blue rain ponchos and proceeded with the fun. Just keep in mind, you are on a 89,000 ton ship and it takes a lot to make the ride bumpy. The danger in tendering comes from the ship and the tender moving up and down out of sync making it unsafe to transfer passengers. Remember a tender is like a wine cork in fully jetted hot tub compared to the ship.

As others have posted, I have a mixed history with HMC. Missed it on Liberty, made it on Victory, made it on Freedom, and then didn't make it on Conquest, just last month. 2-for-4.

The last one hurt the most, since I was the one and only holder of the Golden Ticket-- err, the Private Oasis at HMC. We didn't even stop there; we were told the day before in Nassau that we would not be stopping and had a sea day going to Grand Turk. The upshot was, we got to Grand Turk three hours early...and I had a whopping $1500 in onboard credit due to the P.O. cancellation.

Hope you make it to HMC! It's really one of the prettiest white-sand beaches you'll ever see.

Last year we had a wonderful day on HMC; the next day the winds kicked up and after trying for 30 minutes to dock, we skipped Nassau and had a sea day instead. When the announce was made the whole shop cheered. I guess no one missed Nassau. We are 4/4 for HMC traveling at different times of the year. Good luck!

  • 4 months later...

Think we have made it 3 of 4 times.

Last time we missed it they said was due to winds making tendering unsafe for passengers and crew and we had a sea day.

Sorry it happened as we had rented a villa for the day with an awesome group but safety first.

I keep reading that HMC is often missed. Is that during certain months? I'm going in June and I'm looking forward to it. I hope I don't miss it.

We are 6 for 6. Wind and high seas are the reasons for missing it. Loading and unloading of tenders and getting into the narrow channel. While I do not know for sure, my guess is that it happens more in winter months than other times of year, due to that is when those conditions have the best chance of being present.

Guess they dont make enough revenue from a day at HMC to warrant building a pier and doing some dredging.

We were at HMC on March 31st and I snapped this picture that shows our post at anchor at HMC and the wind speed and direction. Not sure if this is helpful, but at least you can see the wind speed. It was sunny and hot that day and it was a little rough, but we tendered just fine.

While I do not know for a fact' date=' I would think it is more of an ecology thing than and economic thing. HMC is our favorite Caribbean port of call, to be honest, I think dredging and adding pier would detract what the island offers. [/size']

Build a pier so it is not visable from the beach. Great place wish Carnival would send more ships there.

We are due to stop at HMC on our cruise starting April 30Th! I really hope we get to stop!! Have not been to any of the ports on this cruise! But with only 3 port days on a 7 days cruise, would make for a lot of sea days without the stop!! However I'm sure I could find something to do if I had to! :D

Id also be interested in knowing if certain months are more typically for a miss?

was there at the first week of feb (b2b).beautiful island.they will try to block the wind with the ship, but if too windy they will skip it.they had larger tenders this time that were more stable.buy your beer on the ship as you will pay $2.50 more because of taxes.long lines at the buffet but you get food.further down the beach is a lot more peaceful.took the tender back to the island after everyone was coming back to the ship.very nice without the crowd.get your tender ticket early (7:a.m).have a great trip
