Oasis of the Seas: October 31, 2015, Eastern Caribbean

Intro:

This was my second time on an Oasis Class ship, the first being in 2011 on the Allure of the Seas. The Oasis is identical in nearly every way, so I had a good idea of what to expect on board. My wife and I were joined by two of our friends who were also on Allure with us. We parked our car at Park N Go, the lot we use every time we cruise from Port Everglades.

Embarkation:

The terminal was pretty busy on embarkation day, and the line for security was long. Thankfully the terminal is designed for the large crowds of an Oasis Class ship, and everything moved quickly. The process was about a half hour from arrival at the terminal to walking onto the ship. The cabins were already open, so we were able to drop off our luggage before the afternoon activities.

Our Cabin:

We had cabin 10-727, a Boardwalk view balcony room at the very aft end of deck 10. It was my first time in one of these rooms. The cabin itself is a pretty typical setup. I was happy with the multiple power outlets and the shower with sliding doors. The tube of cleanliness is vastly superior to the attack shower curtains found on the older classes.

The entire Boardwalk can be seen from the balcony. Since it was the second from the end, we also had an excellent overview of the Aqua Theater and the ocean off the back of the ship. The big drawback to the room was the noise from the Boardwalk which, even with the door latched, was very noticeable at various times throughout the day up until the final evening activities in the Aqua Theater. This was really more of an issue for my wife who enjoys midday naps, but it bears mentioning. I only took exception in the mornings when the announcements would be blared into the Boardwalk. Wasn’t RCI cutting back on them? The answer is yes, by quite a bit, but even one is too many when they wake up sleeping guests.

Our room attendant Clover Roberts was the best we’ve ever had. She was always smiling, chatting with us and making us feel welcome. The room was always spotless after her visit. She got a glowing review from us on the survey.

The Ship:

It’s hard to believe the Oasis is now six years old. She has been modified a bit since her launch, for the better and for the worse. One big change was the addition of extra cabins, most notably extra suites overlooking the Aqua Theater and in the Crown Loft area. They also eliminated the old Diamond Lounge that overlooked the Royal Promenade in favor of adding more rooms. The “new” Diamond Lounge is actually the old Concierge Lounge located on decks 11 and 12.

The suite guests and Pinnacle Club members now have their own lounge in what used to be the Viking Crown. There is also a dedicated restaurant up there called Coastal Kitchen. Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for my wallet, I was not staying in a suite so I could not get any pictures up there.

Everything else was mostly the same as what I had experienced on Allure. It seems that more cruisers are getting smart about dining on board. There were times when Park Café was unapproachable due to the huge lines. Sadly that crowding would end up being the rule and not the exception during the week. The exact opposite from Allure four years ago when I was pleasantly surprised by how well the ship swallowed 6000-ish guests.

Aside from the ever present hordes of fellow travelers, I didn’t find many problems on board. The LED screens at the Aqua Theater are in need of some new panels, and the audio in the main theater was having some technical issues. Mostly the ship appeared to be in good shape.

Since I've already posted a few pics of the Boardwalk we'll start there

Lovely photos. Haven't seen ones of the Boardwalk at night. Very cool.

Can I ask what restaurant that is in your last photo of Central Park?

Looking forward to seeing and hearing more. Neat that you were on Allure in the past and now can compare to the Oasis.

I'm assuming you were B2B, as we saw that banner the previous week as well.

I'm glad to see the Flyers banner was noticed both weeks. We often bring the banner which provides a bit of privacy as well as support for the local team. :D

Thanks Grady for posting such nice pics.

You're welcome! Glad you're liking them!

Where'd he go??????

One note on the restaurants - Vintages does charge for tapas.

Busy day today, I'll be back on tomorrow with more of the review and pics.
