Dentist on Queen Victoria?

On a tour of the QV spa a few years ago, there was a woman touting tooth-whitening treatments, and her name tag read "dentist." I asked her if she would be qualified to re-cement in a loose crown, and she said yes. But I don't think she's a dentist, at least not in the American sense (a doctor of dental medicine). She was definitely NOT associated with the infirmary.

I think it highly unlikely that she had any registrable dental qualifications other than the ability to read the instruction sheet on the tooth-whitening products.

I don't know which jurisdiction the ship comes under but under UK law, if she were not registrable, trying to pass herself off as a dentist is a criminal offence.

Likewise on this side of the Pond...but maybe her name was Den Tist, cousin of Al R.Gist, etc

I was on a section of the world cruise on Queen Victoria last year. I started in Sydney, Australia. A lady at my dinner table had been on the previous section and was continuing.

She went to the doctor on board about a tooth. The doctor was able to get an appointment with a dentist in Sydney for her. She spent the port day at the dentist office.

Not sure if this is available in all ports, or if the doctor on board happened to know this dentist, but this is what happened last year.

Hope this might help.

This is pretty standard operating procedure. The ship's doctor will notify the agent in the port and the agent has list of medical/dental facilities that would be used, and that are willing to squeeze in an emergency.

The Pursers Office arranged for me to see a dentist when we were in Norway, on the QM2, a few years back - I've never been to the Medical Centre on any of the ships. The first port we stopped at was too small to, apparently, find one - although another passenger got off determined to do so - but once we got to a larger port an appointment was made for me, as chengkp75 says, via the port agent. I was taken to the dentist with a member of the ship's staff, who also needed an appointment, along with another member of staff who was going to see a doctor in a nearby building. Once we had all completed our appointments the cab took us back to the ship - Cunard paid for the cab as I was just an "extra" whilst it was transporting staff. I was very pleased with the service that Cunard provided although, unlike the other passenger, I wasn't in pain - my tooth had broken but the nerve hadn't been exposed. I too have also met the "dentist" in the spa but, like others, I'm unsure of her qualifications - perhaps someone currently onboard can ask her and post the answer?

Similarly, my wife who is a Podiatrist (Bsc Hons) whilst on QV a couple of years ago, went along to a talk on feet and biomechanics.

She was very critical of those who were giving the talk especially as some of the advice was just wrong.

They also gave the impression to everyone that they were qualified, when in fact they were simply pedicurists who hadn't done the 4 year Uni course.

I think most of us agree, there is defiantly no 'qualified dental practitioner' onboard Cunard ships across the fleet.

Here at my own dentist there is a young lady who promotes a tooth whitening programme, however, she has no qualifications to extract, fill or replace crowns.

Just think of all those crew members who are on several months contracts , they have to go ashore for any treatment. :)

  • 5 weeks later...

Cassandra, did you get dental treatment during your QV cruise? Let me know if you have a problem on the Oct. 18 QM2 crossing. I'm a dentist! :)

I was under the impression that most world cruises had a dentist on board. I have toyed with the idea of becoming one as part of a long-off retirement plan. Hey, I can dance, too, so maybe they could also use me as a "gentleman escort". Haha.

Not been on QV yet....6 weeks to go. I was just asking the question about a dentist on board as I was having a bit of a problem.....Thanks for your reply.

Not so with our dental practice. Classed as therapists or hygienists they can certainly do simple fillings and crown fixing and I would be happier with their treatment than the dentist I was taken to by the port agent in Romania once. Definitely a trip back to the 1950's

This from the spiel of a private dental practice in Cheshire UK

Our dental therapists can also perform tooth whitening, take your x-rays and impressions, conduct routine fillings on children and adults, carry out children’s extractions and fit emergency temporary crowns and fillings.

Interesting! We had a UK dentist at our dinner table who was shocked that the spa was performing tooth whitening services. He had a conversation with the 'dental' person during a tour of the ship. Certainly in his view, and he was very vocal about it, the person performing the service in the spa was not qualified.
