luv4cruises Posted January 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2016 CNN reported on the outbreak of the mosquito born Zika virus spreading through the Americas and the Caribbean. I cruised during the Chikingunga scare with two very young grandchildren, We were worried. We took every precaution and all went well. In fact we never saw a mosquito. What are your thoughts? Are the cruise lines concerned?

phillygirl2400 Posted January 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2016 Several airlines just announced that they will let some ticket holders to CDC listed areas cancel or reschedule air travel. Check your airline's webpage if you are concerned. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Rare ghstudio Posted January 28, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2016 Just because you didn't notice them really doesn't mean much, there are definitely mosquitoes and all it takes is one.

Rare Hlitner Posted January 28, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2016 We would be very concerned if we were a pregnant woman and probably avoid/delay travel to parts of the world that have reported cases of this virus. Otherwise, it is just one more mosquito spread virus similar to Dengue. For those (non-pregnant) folks who worry about this kind of thing, just take normal and reasonable precautions against mosquitoes. Hank

mcrcruiser Posted January 28, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 28, 2016 Apparently these virus are emanating out of Africa ,where the Chikungunya virus came from & is also expanding world wide . Many millions have been infected & when a normal mosquito bites a infected person it spreads rapidly not only in the Atlantic Ocean area but also in the Pacific & Indian ocean areas . There has been NO effort to find a cure for these virus ;which is really hard to understand that why big pharma & the bio tech people have not developed a inoculation against these virus

Celebrity Cruises Posted January 29, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 29, 2016 Celebrity Cruises is committed to the safety and health of our guests and crew. We have been closely monitoring the Zika virus situation and are aware that the CDC has issued a travel alert for certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. We will assist any pregnant women who do not feel comfortable sailing to countries affected with the Zika virus by providing alternate itinerary options. This may include providing guests with a future cruise credit valid for two years so that they may re-schedule their voyage for a later date, with no penalty. In order to reduce the risk of contracting any number of diseases spread by mosquito bite, including Zika virus, we urge our guests to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by remaining in well screened or air conditioned areas when possible, by wearing light-colored clothing that adequately covers the arms and legs, and by applying insect repellant to both skin and clothing. Should you have any additional questions about the Zika virus we encourage you to visit the CDC's website.
