Voyager class vs Freedom class

We have been on the Independence of the Seas and we are planning a family cruise for April 2017. (I have the Indy booked again but subject to change). There are some dates/itineraries that might work better on a Voyager class ship. Do you think we will notice the ship being smaller?

Independence is a Freedom class ship. If you book another one it won't be any smaller.

If you mean that you might book a Voyager class ship there won't be much difference. Freedom class ships are just stretched Voyager class ships. The pool deck will not have the Kid's Zone. The Royal Promenade a bit shorter without Sorrento's Pizza. The pizza will be in the Cafe Promenade.

Independence is a Freedom class ship. But the differences between Voyager and Freedom class ships are minor. The Voyager class ships are laid out essentially the same as the Freedom class ships but just a little smaller. The story always was that Freedom class ships were Voyager class ships on steroids.

Look at each class's deck plans to see the differences but as example, Freedom has an H2) Zone pool - Voyager does not. Freedom has a couple more stores in the Royal Promenade, etc.

Our preference is Voyager Class. We noticed a lot more people on Freedom. Windjammer was really crowded any time we wanted to go there. Freedom had a movie screen by the pool and the surfing. They are both nice, go for itinerary.

We've been on Voyager Class several times and will go on our first Freedom Class this October. Comparing Navigator to Liberty after overhaul I found the following difference (most mentioned above). Liberty gets a screening room (Deck 2), Karaoke (Deck 3), Sorrento's and Cupcake Cupboard (Deck 5), Boxing Ring (Deck 11) and water slides (new on Liberty) but no mini golf and no Izumi's. Liberty has the cantelevered hot tubs but not the large one inside the gym. Some of the changes are specific to Liberty and Navigator.

Mini golf is being taken out in favor of the water slides.

Voyager class is my favorite....big enough, but not too big...

I think a lot depends on one's previous experience. Those who have sailed on smaller ships before moving onto larger units often regard their earlier cruise vessels as better.

Take the Radiance and Voyager class ships for instance. Most people I've spoken to who have sailed on the Radiance before trying out the Voyager have mentioned that they prefer the former, whereas those who started off on the Voyager have felt the limitations of the Radiance and were not happy with downsizing.

We like the Voyager class better, less people. But the freedom class is basic the same ship only longer.:) Have a great next cruise.

Based only on Independence (Freedom) and Explorer (Voyager), the lack of the H2O zone/kiddies pool really makes a big difference if travelling with very young kids. The main pools are way too deep for very young kids and they have nowhere else to go if they want some water time.

That's true, plus the H2O zone has a pool diaper area, which does not exist on Voyager class.

Thanks for the similar and quick responses. (And for reading my mind) H2O zone not important, since we are all adults and probably not big shoppers, I think I will keep them on my list of possibilities.

You're missing a key point. The H2O zone is somewhere for someone else's little darlings to go away from you. ;)

Stick with the Indy

Freedom Class differences: Regular pool area is larger. Separate Kids H20 Zone. Solarium area is bigger as well as the pool. More shops in the Promenade. Sorrentos & Ben & Jerrys have their own storefront as opposed to everything in the Cafe. On Air Karaoke Club, even though it's in a horrible location. Casino is larger. 2 out of 3 Freedom Class ships have 3D movies, Voyager does not. I most definitely feel less crowded and less congested on Freedom Class by far, especially on Sea Days on the Pool deck, huge difference.

That's all I can think of right now. Hi, I'm new here too.

Could be. Could also be that having the H2O zone on the ship will draw more families with more little darlings, who won't be in the H2O zone all the time.
