Norwegian Sun: Tips and Tidbits?

Has anyone found the Sun to be particularly smoky - or are there particular areas where smoke collects?

I've read there there are issues on the newer ships with smoke collecting in the atrium - I'm asthmatic, with allergies that go berserk in smoky environment and last for hours after, so I'd take any tips of what to avoid.

I figure the cigar bar (duh!) and probably the casino. Any other tips/warnings?

The cigar bar is no longer active on the sun. The space is just an extension of Windjammers Bar - no smoking. It was smoky in the casino, but just use deck 6 to get to the theater and main dining room and avoid the casino.

The only other spot was the smoking area on the pool deck - port side near the fitness center windows. We used the starboard doors near the spa instead.

The Norwegian Sun in port in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada last September. The DW and I had just gotten off the Norwegian Pearl and came outside to see our favorite ship, the Sun, in port as well. I snapped this photo at about 9am with the sun to my back.

Thought of another question: has anybody been in the midship balcony cabins on Deck 9?

Do the bathrooms have shower curtains or doors? (I've heard if they're curtains that I should get some weighted clips to stop them from blowing in.)

For a bonus point: Has anyone by chance been in 9036? If so, give me any and all thoughts or advice you might have!

I don't believe so, it's Sea water. But it has been 9 years since I last sailed her.

If it isn't heated, it has always been warmer than the big pools...presumably because it is so shallow....at least I hope that is why:eek:

All of Sun's balcony stateroom showers have curtains. The shower is round with a third of the shower being curtain. It is not a gracious shower says this six foot seven, 300lb male but I have not had any real issue except when I have dropped the soap. Regarding keeping the curtain from clinging to yourself, I have found that if I make sure that the bottom is completely inside the raised ledge at the bottom of the shower and fully closed on each side, that it doesn't blow in. I think this is because of the bathroom exhaust in the main part of the bathroom puts negative air pressure against the curtain.

Mostly this is just a bump for the other posters who are leaving on Sun cruises in the near future, but also to remind anybody with a recent or upcoming Sun itinerary - any intelligence on the upcoming refurbishment would be greatly appreciated!

Were you able to get into Glacier Bay?

We've heard that can be "iffy" early in the season.

Thanks!

You may be thinking of Sawyer Glacier. There is generally no problem getting into Glacier Bay. We were there in mid-May.

That was our main concern about booking this on short notice, for early in the season.

Turns out a prime suite is still available, or suddenly became available.

Does the amount of snow cover (as one heads north) change a lot from late May/early June til August?

We'd rather see snow topped hills/mountains than nice greenery, which, beautiful though it is, can be seen further south, etc.

Thanks again.

Here's an Alaska cruise question: does the Sun have a naturalist onboard during the glacier scenic cruises?

Or, either way, do those of you who've taken the Glacier Bay cruises have recommendations on the best spots on the ship (inside or outside) for those days to view the scenery?

The Sun does have Park Rangers who board very early on Glacier Bay Day. They do speak and are helpful in spotting wildlife. Hint, a bear on the shore appears very small and at first look like a dark rock.

Several of the good Glacier viewing spots are pictured in this thread. Forward view, either up top on deck 13 or the outside observation deck in front of the Observation Lounge. If you sit inside the Observation Lounge be aware that the forward view can be blocked by people outside on the deck. People tend to come and go from there because it can be cold. There are chairs and small tables along the side windows that are probably a better choice. I can't remember if they open the crew area on the bow for public viewing.

You can also view from various spots around the ship including the Great Outdoors, the Garden Cafe (not hogging window table during peak eating time :) ) the Promenade Deck, Sports Bar etc. Glacier Bay Day is good for getting up early and walking around the ship checking out various views. If you have a balcony category or above stateroom you can pop back into your stateroom to warm up and still see out.

  • 3 weeks later...
If you are interested in looking at a beautiful, dark sky full of stars away from light pollution on a clear night, check out deck 13 forward. The sun is the only NCL ship we are aware of that has an area that isn't lit up at night where one can do this.

Thanks so much for that info. We will be sailing mid August for 2 weeks and really, the view is why we are going :-)

Bumping for any recent Sun travelers to give their thoughts (and those who seem to have some scoop on the drydock currently in progress.)

I know the Alaska crowd is eagerly waiting to hear from those of you on the early sailings out of San Francisco next week!

There are at least two threads on here about the dry dock and refurbishing. I don't know how to link to them, but one has a title something like "Is the Sun Being Refurbished" and the other is something like "Why Did the Sun Not Leave San Francisco." You should be able to find them in a quick search. She is currently in dry dock briefly in SF, apparently for some minor work on engines and public rooms.

Glacier Bay was great on the Sun first cruise of 2015. If you like trivia, study up on tennis, ice hockey and James Bond movies. In addition basketball was invented in Canada and the most downloaded Beatles song was............ Here Comes the Sun. It was a great cruise, and there were more Canadians than USA folks on the ship.

Did you go to the White Dance Party? Was wondering if they use heaters on the pool deck or if they move it inside in Alaska when it is cold? We are going during the second half of August and trying to decide what to buy to wear since we are coming from the heat of Florida.
