Just back from Emerald, and she was a true GEM.

Could not be happier with the old girl.

"Old Girl"???

She's been in service for less than 10 years...

It's not as if she's akin to a piece of electronics such as an Iphone or something of the sort.

Alas, I suppose in this age of focusing on the 'newest being the best' world that we live in, I imagine perhaps that she could be considered a little 'dated'.

I never said that the food on the Emerald was terrible. I just would like to point out that it just isn't a great as most are led to believe.

Most of the Princes cheerleaders praise the Emerald as having the best food available & is just is not so. My standards are probably are much lower than most but to say that the Emerald's food was "outstanding" is your opinion.

I like to point out to perspective cruisers that it's far from outstanding or over the top as you put it.

My posts tend to point out the few negatives found on the ships & not the many things they do correctly. There are enough of those posts already.

So as I stated previously you can ignore my posts altogether so they don't upset you & let those who who want to read them do so.

Never thought id be doing this :) here goes.

We sailed the Emerald Princess March 5-10. To be honest. I also didn't see the big deal about 'Anything' on this ship.

This is just IMHO.

The food in the Horizon Court was mostly terrible. Very bland with not much variety or imagination. Always left hungry during lunch and and the Mexican night dinner was terrible.

MDR was 'Normal' by Princess standards ive experienced on other Princess ships..Grown Grill was the usual great dinner its always been.

Some annoying things for me......not a big deal for most--but very important for me. Im a diabetic. Sugar free isnt just a choice--its Lfe Saving.. Like many I have a preference of flavors I enjoy. During the entire cruise the MDR and the Ice Cream parlor ONLY offered chocolate (I hate) ice cream or dessert. Ask another Diabetic if you don't believe me :) When asked about a different flavor or a different dessert option. Same answer at both venues,,,,,, its what they gave us  To be farir, Horizon Court Aways offered a sugar free dessert as usual--and a daily change. Not a big deal for most....But Very important for my health and cruise enjoyment.

Many things just did not work during or cruise.....Steam room did not work the first 3 days...was told to pay for the Thermal Suite--they were working there.....Right

Hot Tubs did not work well at the Spa pool the entire cruise....No idea about the Main pools with so many Sring

Breakers.

The Comedian was great, thought most of the other shows were lacking. Im probably in the minority here. Also, couldn't understand why the Ice Cream counter was next to the HOT Pizza ovens, while the Hamburgers were on the other end of the pool

I dislike the Royal Class ships alot. I prefer the Grand Class . The crew was overwhelmed by the number of spring

breakers, so they weren't at the top of there game.

AGAIN THS S IMHO ONLY...

The Emerald, is my FIRST Princess cruise that I was glad when it was over.....Would I sail her again? If given a choice--probably not......For the things I look for...Food, Spa stuff, my Sugar Free options, things working etc. My overall view was low.

BUT hey this was my experience on this ship for this ONE sailing. Have a GREAT cruise on whichever ship you sail. Cruise Princess.

This sounds a lot like our experience....but I only comment on the negative items which make it sound like I dislike Princess in total which is not the case.

Some people on this board can't accept that Princess isn't the greatest in all departments. I too disliked the Royal class ships at one time but have come to accept & like them even more as I see the advantages of the new design.

It's probably a good thing that everyone sees it differently. ;)

As you'll probably agree. Theres so many different aspects to cruising, you need to find what you like when cruising. I enjoy using the steam rooms. I dislke having to pay a high price in the Enclave on Royal class ships when Free steam rooms are available on Grand class ships.

I enjoy the separate area for MUTS on Grand class....I enjoy the Retreat pool area on Royal class. HC on RC ships..Ice Cream (milk shakes) on GC ships. Different things on different ships. I love to eat, if the food is a miss, the cruise is a miss. My next cruise is on a RC ship..thank god for OBC to use in the Enclave :)

I can agree with everything you say. Although we don't use the steam rooms I would never pay for their use on the Royal or Regal even if I had the extra credit to burn. I personally just don't like them.

This is the setup on Ruby and Crown, too. It's confusing because sometimes there will be one long line for both and sometimes it's split into two, one for ice cream and one for pizza. I guess they think if you want a hamburger for lunch, you should walk off the calories before you hike off to get dessert at the ice cream counter.

I knew there was a logical explanation to this set up :) Now if I can get them to serve a Sugar Free ice cream other than Chocolate. :D

Actually the Steam rooms helps me maintain my sugar levels. A problem I have is the inflated pricing thats charged single users--my wife doesn't use the steam/sauna. Couples are charged $249 and singles $199. That is absolutely unfair.

Not sure who you asked, but if this happens to you again, ask the Maitre 'd or your headwaiter. They can influence what can be made.

I can see why that would keep you off of the newer ships.

I do understand this.....my point is, it shouldn't have to be done. Its a complete lack of caring . Diabetes isn't thought of as a major issue --yet---in many venues....some small local stores dont even stock diet (sugar free) sodas. Diet Is still viewed as for weight loss, not sugar free.

Remember when Princess had the mid day dessert displays on deck? People would take the Sugar free limited desserts because they LOOKED nice.

I don't like it...but im used to it.......The NY Cheese cake is always available. I just dont eat the Strawberries :)

I once sailed on a RCL ship and was informed there was NO sugar free dessert for dinner one night.

To put this in more dollars and cents. With my Casino rate. I booked a 6 night Western Caribbean cruise on the CB for just $331 per (free Steam room) Just 33% more for the entire cruse than the Royal/Regal Enclave. Mind boggling.

  • 3 weeks later...

We are thinking of cruising from Southhampton to Singapore 30 nights in September on the Emerald Princess. Has anyone done this cruise before? Can anyone tell me if there was a predominant number of any particular nationality on board? What the ship is like and whether there was anything we should be aware of?

We have not done your intended cruise but have been on the Emerald before, and again next month.

It's a nice ship and we enjoyed everytime we were on her, aside from the itineraries.

Maybe, you can start with this link in knowing what to expect:

My question is regarding the type of chairs / loungers on the Promenade deck on Emerald.

I have been on Diamond with deck loungers and Golden without these as the deck is narrower.

Does the Emerald have loungers, or padded chairs, or hard bench seats on deck 7 ?

Thanks.

Padded chairs and a few hard bench seats. No loungers.
