I enjoy the Alaskan Bush people, a new series is currently running here in the UK. The seem to sail into Hoonah and Icy Straight Point frequently and also Jeaneau. Jean.

"Icy Strait Point" is Hoonah. A "compound" It is native corporation contracted with cruise lines.

The few residents, I know there don't think much of them, and have a lot of "stories" that slant far away from the "reality show", negatively. :)

I grew up in Hoonah and still have friends there. The Brown family only goes out to "Brown Town" to film. The rest of the time they are put up at the Lodge by the production crew. When they aren't filming, the family lives out of state.

Bottom line: most of what you see on the show is fake.

We were in Hoonah a few weeks ago --- the Bush People were not there. However, the "Integrity was docked nearby where we were taking our whale watching tours.

Same for us. We even asked locals. They said Brown Town is about 6 miles from Hoonah/ISP. The Browns were not in town (and hadn't been for some time), the Integrity was docked, and they only are in town to film.

That part was obvious to us, when the focus has switched from survival, we must hunt deer or starve mode, to we are building Brown Town and all these inventions, and all the boys are getting their own 'houses', while not preparing for winter at all. Most people who live remotely like that spend the summer busting their humps to prepare for winter.

Eh, whatever. We watch it for the scenery.

That explains why 2 of them were convicted of illegally accepting the State of Alaska oil dividend check. I didn't like the way the show glossed over the convictions as if they did nothing wrong and just plea bargained to spare the rest of the family.

Reality TV is a joke, on us.

Do you honestly believe that any of the "reality" shops are not totally faked. if you do believe that they are real, I have several bridges to sell you.

DON

Problem is that reality shows are cheap to make although using the term "reality" is a real cheat.

Those shows on Alaska have really resemblance to real life up here but people still buy into the illusion they create.

P.S. I'm waiting for versions of "Naked And Afraid" or "Dating Naked" set in Alaska. Now that would be the ultimate :)

Another good reason not to watch TV. :)

(I had no idea what the question was about until I read further down the thread. I have heard of the crab boat show - mostly from here...)

Our guide in Ketchikan said that they live there, and we went on our tour boat past the island they live on. He said they come into town every now and then, will pose for pics with people. LOL I find that show to be a joke.

Yeah, I thought it was funny how they just glossed over the fact that the one young man got braces, while his poor toothlesswonder of a sister is walking around with 1/2 a front tooth. Braces require you to go back to the dentist every month for 2 years!!!! Not really out in the bush!

I figured if I ever won the lottery I would hunt that poor girl down and buy her a new tooth. There is something wrong with those people.:eek:

Those of us who live here are somewhat perplexed about the proliferation of the "reality" shows. But the Alaska Dispatch newspaper has had some incredibly funny reviews of the "Alaska Bush People" (or what ever that show is called). Use the search function on the Alaska Dispatch website (http://www.adn.com) to find them.

It is fun to watch some of the shows just to see some of the familiar places that we visited. I've never seen Alaskan Bush People...or whatever, but have watched Alaska Railroad (pretty hokey, but beautiful scenery) and Alaska State Troopers. From watching the latter I have concluded that Alaskans are often a strange breed! ;)

I only watched a few episodes last week when I accidentally ran into it while my DH was away on a long trip. Had to watch something and was hoping to see some Alaska scenery. I wanted to see Hoonah. They didn't show much, but I will be looking for that mud bog where they acquired their "New" cabin. We are going to be in Alaska next week. It really did help me to get excited about my cruise.

The fact that they don't have teeth just grosses me out. I don't care what kind of hillbilly you are, you make sure your children have teeth!
