Stars on TA

Every ship we've been on the stars are more visible and abundant certainly when compared to viewing them at home. The ships lights are not that intense to create much interference. Something I enjoy seeing. I would suggest a location as far forward or aft away from any main lit activity area for best viewing.

Dress, warm, go to the top deck and then watch after 11 or 12 at night. some, not all ships turn off upper deck lights. Princess Diamond however, did not. They had strings of bright bulbs all over and you could hardly see.

I was just wondering if I can expect the sky at night to be bursting with stars or if the ship's lights dampen the effect.

Both. :D A lot will depend on the weather and moon phase -- I've done crossings where on clear, moonless nights the stars were phenomenal, even with the ship's light pollution. Best of stargazer's luck to you!

We talked with the one of the ship's officers on our South America cruise a few years ago and he had them turn the upper lights off one night and gave a brief star talk. He was surprised that anyone was interested. So maybe see if you can reach an officer and see if anyone wants to do that for you.
