Normally an easy thing to do but I think it was "Pablo" on another thread that pointed out Princess is using Drupal for everything. Messaging alerts would be easy if everyone was connected to the internet but they need it to work intranet. More of a challenge with Drupal. Each ship would have to handle the messaging with a local server. Of course this could be done but more difficult than just creating a simple messaging app. I have my doubts but if it's not coming soon - ...hey Princess, how about letting Apple iMessage text go through (without photo/video) to the internet without logging on... Wouldn't consume that much bandwidth, solves the messaging alerts on board and as a perk allows passengers to stay connected with others back home. More of a challenge with Drupal. I was waiting to disembark royal this morning, and was playing with this. As I have mentioned before, there are notifications, but only when using the no longer available app, and only when connected to the INTERNET. I had a laptop connected to ship intranet, which I was using to send message to Mrs. Pablo's messenger ID I had a phone connected to the cell network / internet in ft. lauderdale. Every time I sent a message from the laptop, I got a notification on the phone. It uses Drupal, and Google Cloud Messaging for notifications. Unfortunately, this does not work if you are connected to only the princess intranet, as most people would be at sea. As princess dropped the app, it is really moot. On the other hand, at least on royal, they have fixed the google captive portal issue by allowing a few google URLs, to pass through their captive portal. This allows most android 5 and later phones to stay connected. About the only place on the ship that I lost my wifi connection was in the elevator. This makes me more interested in working on a browser extension to handle notifications. And, for the folks who cry that they will be disturbed by notifications... I was using a custom app to check for messages and make notifications; in the atrium and in the lido, there was so much ambient noise, I could barely hear a chime with a phone in my pocket at the highest volume. How else can you see the purchase of a drink posted to your folio before the drink is even delivered? They were blocking crew wifi there though. I can't imagine why... They both were over 100 db most of the time. DEAFENING. While they do have a rule for the crew not use their phones while on duty at least 8 out of 10 carry them all the time. btw- the crew also has addition movies available that you can't view in the passenger cabins. I had a balcony cabin, and the TV is mounted almost flush to the wall, at the foot ofthe bed. There is plenty of space on either side. It was no problem to reach in from the left side, unplug the princess hdmi cable, and plug in my own. Previously on both regal and royal, I had had an inside cabin, where the tv was mounted almost flush to the wall, but in the corner of the room, so that there was no way to access the hdmi inputs. However, if it had been a mirror-image inside cabin, there would be no problem. This is like many things on princess, there is no one answer fits all -- so I find many of the posts on cruise critic amusing. Interesting point about the show lounge. I have attended some production shows where the music is so loud that I can feel it. btw- the crew also has addition movies available that you can't view in the passenger cabins. The best thing the crew has is mega-byte based internet, rather than minute-based. They can receive notifications and only use a tiny amount of data. Last year, I was arranging to meet a crew member on shore. I send a couple messages, but they never changed to 'seen' in Viber. I was worried whether she had read the messages, and would show up. She showed up, no problem. She had basically read the messages just from the notification text, and didn't need to open the app and use any data. I admired her cleverness.
