.... anyone with any experience booking a solo TA at the last minute.

I'll have a fully refundable flight as backup but I'll be in Europe in August and wondered if anyone has booked a Viking Passage westbound (or other TransAtlantic on HAL) on short notice in previous years.

thanks in advance

A friend of mine's daughter just got back from a 45 day TA solo cruise on the Rotterdam. She had a wonderful time and has me thinking about doing something similar once I retire. She said everyone was so friendly and she met so many amazing people who she hopes to keep in contact with.

She booked a guarantee inside cabin and ended up on Main Deck, she was pleased with her cabin.

I always tell my friends, who don't understand how I could cruise alone, that I'm not rowing across the ocean by myself. There are always great people around. I only do long ones and always have a wonderful time.

There are some terrific transatlantic bargains on HAL and other lines, I have seen ridiculously low fares. The Voyage of the Vikings is a popular itinerary, commands a premium price, sails in high season, and may sell out. In contrast, our November Prinsendam transatlantic was only 90% full.

Now when people ask if I'm going alone, I say "no, there will be about a thousand others.";). I'm getting ready for a fourth solo (can hardly believe it myself) and am looking forward to the day DH gets more vacation. Starting a new job is hard.....

I admire you ladies your willingness to ry such a voyage on your own. I don't think I could get e xcited about that and would not share a cab in with a girl friend. sigh.......

I am in total agreement with you, Sail, which is why I cruise solo. I tried a 7 day sharing a cabin with a close friend; it was a total disaster. Never again! Example: I have short, run my fingers through it and go hair, especially when cruising. My friend has long, wavy, high maintenance locks. I spent what felt like the entire 7 days impatiently waiting for her to do her hair.

So, I read this and thought, "Why?"

I'd tell her that I'd be in the casino or on the pool deck or wherever, and then go enjoy my cruise.

I have taken five solo cruises. Can't wait to do it again.

Agreed. Unless she's tying up the bathroom, and you need to get in there.

I have shared with my grandgirls, mother of a friend, and strangers. I'll say that sharing with strangers is the easiest of the three. With strangers there's no long-term relationship to keep, so there's no reason not to speak up freely. If the stranger/roomie is doing something that is a problem, you just say so, and work it out. If they are taking forever to get ready, you head to where you want to go. No one is tied at the hip.

Unfortunately, difficult to do with with a very close friend (and next door neighbor!) when preparing for a long planned and highly anticipated excursion together or a special dinner. All of my cruises except that one, before or since, have been solo; my freedom to go and come is worth the single supplement.

I've traveled all over the world by myself, including cruising, and I LOVE IT! I became accustomed to it when working and the job required a lot of travel. Now I strongly prefer it. I've met many wonderful people and a few jerks, but I don't think that's any different than what others encounter. On my first cruise, I shared a cabin with a friend and I'll never share a room again. I love her dearly, and would happily travel with her again, but I won't share a room.
