I'm betting Carnival Plat/Diamond cruisers could start a hot new trend by requesting that skin tones other than their own be used for the skin graft.

 

So like..you're as white as paper but you have one teeeny chocolate brown square of skin near your wrist to show that YOU are one of the elite. People would be showing it off. ALL of the Kardashians would have skin grafts to contrast their own natural (or not so natural via tanning beds, etc) skin tones to show just how awesome they are. Because you know if the Kardashians do it, it is a THING that MUST be done.

They should call the medallion Cruise Alert so when you are on a really bad cruise you can press it and help is called to get you off in time to receive the Carnival Guaranteed Vacation. :)

A few questions come to mind. First, will these devices be replacing the Sign & Sail cards, or will they be offered as an alternate choice to the techno-geeks that want the latest electronic gadget? I'm sure this new system comes with a hefty price tag for the Carnival Corp., so will this mean an increase in cruise fares? And if cruisers have to pay for the medallions (via increased fares), can they be reprogrammed for other uses after the cruise is over? What will the power source be? I'm guessing some sort of rechargeable battery. Hopefully not like the nickel cadmium batteries that have been known to overheat and explode in various devices, such as smart phones, laptops and hover boards. if so, using fire retardant door decorations will be the least of Carnival's concerns. Or maybe they'll use a button battery like most wrist watches use, good for about a year. I'm tempted to print off a copy of the report and file it away for about three or four years, then wait and see what comes of this. How long before this gadget goes the way of all of the other gadgets that are now in a landfill somewhere? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

While I get the sarcasm here...I would guess that data collection is absolutely a key driver of this for Carnival. Much like the Disney Magic Bands, this will allow Carnival to track guest activity patterns. How long are you staying at the casino? What time do most people go to Lido? How long to they stay there? Etc, etc, etc. It's great data for them to help customize their offerings to what guests really do/want. Many will freak out about it (like they do with the Magic Bands), but overall, it just helps the company deliver a better product, so I don't mind.

This agree with this 100%. The long term (read 5-10 years) benefits to a system like this will be amazing. And whether or not it is noticed, even the naysayers will see a benefit to this. LONG TERM.

 

Short term, IMHO, this will be a neat way to change things up...Tho, there will, as with anything new, be some period of adjustment for past carnival guests.

 

For me, the long term benefits to a system like this, are well worth the short term inconvenience. I like the idea of being reminded of events, etc. You know how many things I've missed because I was busy elsewhere just enjoying the pool, balcony, etc.? There are so many possibilities. Some will stick, others will go the way of the do-do. That's technology.

This is their version of the Disney Magic Band...I love the idea and hope we see it rolled out soon.

So much easier than carrying cards around....It's what I love about going to WDW or cruising on DCL...you just swipe your wrist and Voila!

Do the Disney bands have any exposed metal? DD has severe metal allergies. Even plastic watches have a metal plate covering the battery.

Hubby and I are tech people, but can easily do with out it for trips. We have Samsung Watches and Gear VR. Would these "watches" be water proof? Considering many on here live at the poolside while on a cruise. They would need to make them water proof.

 

Still trying to look at all our VR pictures from our last cruise. Which we got a LOT of stares from people, who didn't know what the Samsung VR camera was. :eek: :D

 

I would be open to this. Seems like a interesting ideal. Although I think some things need to be worked out. Like are they throw aways or do they need to be turn back in???

Too bad there isn't a way they can just send all that stuff to like an Apple Watch or Samsung Gear and have it transmit to your cabin door via Bluetooth or something to unlock it and at the POS registers as well. That way you don't have to wear anything else.

If I am to the point of being too weak or lazy where I can no longer put a plastic card in a slot to open my door, I guess I had better check myself into a rest home and watch TV all day long.

That's why the medallions will be "personalized". This technology is the way Carnival is heading and I can't see them ever going to smart phone technology but they will use it to complement this effort.

How is using a cell phone different than getting your boarding pass on your phone and getting on a plane? JH has even mentioned, and I have seen it on here as well, that your boarding pass can be found in an email that you can electronically show to the people at the port and it acts the same as the paper one. I haven't done it that way myself, but it is an option from what I understand.

 

As far as making online purchases on the cell phone, I would think that it could be done through the Hub App which does require your folio number to log into, therefore, identifying the passenger.

RFID rather than magnetic strip. Which means I can cut out one trip to guest services each cruise because I put the card in the same pocket as my phone.

Thank you for bringing that up. Pacemaker compatibility is a serious concern and affects a significant portion of the worldwide cruising population. And yes, they had better have an alternative for folks!
