I've heard the ship's internet is very slow. Is it too slow to be able to FaceTime with kids back home?

Yes. No. Maybe. Depends on the cruise line, the ship, and the location at the time.

On carnival I think you would need thier highest internet package to use facetime. We have had great results with thier social media package and even made video calls on FB Messenger. Can't beat the price at $25 for the week to stay in touch with kids at home.

Regardless of the speed, recognize that some lines block a variety of streaming apps/services.

We were on the NCL Escape, Getaway and Breakaway during the past year and we did not have any problems with Face Time. I am surprised how the cabins are better and better for FTing. Yes, some of the public spots have strong signals.... and you can find some quieter locations.

Did not have a problem with Facetime on our last Regal Princess sailing.

I have been using FaceTime on RCCL Quantum class ships without problems while it didn't work at Celebrity Equinox at my cruise in January 2016.

My next cruise is 'Legend of the Seas' and they do announce:
