18-21 year olds on RCCL

Hi there... I was just wondering if there were others in this age group (or their parents/grandparents) who could share how those in this age group enjoyed their RCCL cruise? My son would be 18 next year, but still in high school when we cruise. He did enjoy a previous cruise where he was in the teen club often with friends he met onboard and is a fairly outgoing person.

This group 18-21 is dependent on fellow cruisers for entertainment. They are to old for teen club, to young for bars. My daughter was very board on the cruise we were on when she was 18. If there is a good group of 18 -21s on board I am sure he will have a blast otherwise he may be spending a lot of time with mom and dad.

They can indeed go to bars - just no alcohol. Lots of virgin drinks available. They can go to the disco and casino if they want. There are plenty of people over 21 who don't drink alcohol and still manage to have a good time. I really don't understand the big issue.

18-21 year olds can do everything any other cruiser can do, except drink alcohol; there may be some night clubs that have a late night age cut off. They can still enjoy the music in the bars; remember watching high school kids dancing at Boleros, so to say they are too young for bars is not really true.

 

Kids often make friends during the day on the sports court or pool areas and friendships develop.

My DD was 17 last cruise and there weren't any teens in her age group, hard to believe. She had the best cruise so far because she hung out with Mom and Dad. She enjoyed watching the drunk people at the silent party, Quest, going to the adult late night show. Sh actually enjoys sitting in the DL drinking Shirley Temples. She was a Senior in high school. This year she is a freshman in college and compared it to some of the homecoming parties she attended. I did not want to hear that :eek:

 

I have just the opposite problem, my 12 year old is upset that she has to go to teen lounge can't attend Adventure Ocean because they have more fun. I told her she will ok because when she makes new friends we never see her except for dinner.

 

It will be what he makes it. It will also be a jump start on college life. It will help him feel comfortable meeting new people for the first time.

This may not be what you want to hear, but.... let your son bring a friend. The berths are double occupancy and you end up paying around the same cost for your son vs your son + friend.

 

I've been cruising since 14 and have pretty much always brought a friend along. In college from 18-22 my friends would pay for the flights to the port location and they would put their credit card on their sea pass account for on-board purchases.

It will depend on your child. It is an age that I wish they would do some organized activities for, special rockwall time, meet & greets, karaoke, etc. Something they could go to and meet up with kids their age. Our girls in this age bracket just spent a lot of time with mom & dad. Not to much different for our middle daughter as she is real shy and would never go to the kids/teen club but our older daughter loved the teen club all the way up until her last cruise as a teen (less than a month to 18). It wasn't so much about the teen club as it was a place to meet the kids in their age bracket. Last trip we took her on she was 20 and was with us all the time and she is very outgoing and loves to meet new people. Just found it hard to meet anyone her age without any organized meeting place or activity. Pretty sure if we take the older two again we will be letting them each take a friend. But every kid is different so you never know how yours will react.

it honestly depends on how many others are there and who attend the first couple of meets for that crowd.

 

at 18 they can do everything except drink on board(* but in most ports that is not an issue) but even though he is still in school, he is locked out of the teen club.

 

if he does Flow rider or even just likes a good game of pick up Ball, he'll probably find plenty of people to hang out with.

they do. the first night and I wanna say on all sea days there is a scheduled 'singles get together' for 18-21.

 

the first night the AD or whoever hosts it asks the people that show up what they would be interested in doing as a group. I have seen special FR sessions listed. I also know there are sports events listed

Must vary by ship & cruise director. Harmony did not have a singles get together for 18-21, they did have singles get together s each evening for solo travelers (my sister who is divorced and 49) went to a couple and said she was probably to young

This question comes up on a regular basis. 18-21yo, imo, is a hard age group entertainment wise: too old for the kids' clubs and too young for the drinking venues.

 

People have recommended going to the sports areas, such as the basketball court, or the casino, in order to meet similar ages. Traveling with a friend or sibling is always helpful.

 

They sometimes have a meetup for the 18-21s but I have heard/read that it is not a separate venue and you will actually be mixed with all ages.

This is issue my daughter had. She went to the posted Merton and greet but it was held in somewhere like the disco at 10 pm. She had no idea who else was there for the same thing. During this age she just hung around with us.

 

On the other hand my son has always met others his age either on the sports court, flow rider, or other such venue.

 

It really depends on the individual and who else is on the same sailing.
