mdpseattle Posted February 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 16, 2017 Anyone know what the threshold is for swells before a ship won't sail or return to port? L.A. Has a high surf advisory with 13' swells forecast this Saturday the 18th, precisely the day that the Ruby Princess does it's turnaround. Sigh. What happens if you go to port and the ship hasnt made it back from the previous cruise? Sit and wait, I guess. jennybenny Posted February 16, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 16, 2017 I don't know what the threshold is, but I have heard of delays due to the weather. I'm sure Princess will contact you should delayed boarding become necessary. I would remain positive at this point since there is nothing you can do about the weather and hope that you will board on time as expected. Good luck and let us know how it goes for you. :)

What happens if you go to port and the ship hasnt made it back from the previous cruise? Sit and wait, I guess. If Princess anticipates this well in advance, they send advisories for instructions to incoming passengers. If it happens when you are already in port, your guess is right. Sit and wait for Princess announcements. Port arrival delays/cancellations were experienced for CB sailings in Houston last Jan 2016.
SadieN Posted February 16, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 16, 2017 Make sure Princess has your contact info.
Ole Faithful Posted February 16, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 16, 2017 Check the email address that you provided to Princess often. We had issues boarding in Rio and the boarding delays were passed to us. Not the reason, just that we were delayed. And it may not be until you get to the port. cb at sea Posted February 17, 2017 #7 Share Posted February 17, 2017 It would have to be like 50 foot or so....and high winds, at that. These ships are designed to sail through bad weather.

It can take a lot less than that though to delay them or stop them getting into a Port.

Has a high surf advisory with 13' swells forecast this Saturday the 18th, precisely the day that the Ruby Princess does it's turnaround. A couple of weeks ago there was bad weather in L.A. Two ships sped up to arrive before the weather became really bad. Both ships were delayed in departing for the next cruise, at least one for a full day. However all passengers were on board during the delay. Outside of no shops open and the casino also closed, they were on a cruise.
mdpseattle Posted February 18, 2017 Author #13 Share Posted February 18, 2017 Made it to LAX from Seattle, it was a 12 hour journey. LAX was an absolute nightmare. Arrived but waited in the plane for 2 hours on the tarmac because there were not enough people to unload the plane. Now to sleep for a few hours before the cruise begins later today! mdpseattle Posted February 18, 2017 Author #14 Share Posted February 18, 2017 Despite the poopy LAX airport and weather, arriving at the port, everyone so far is extremely organized, very polite and friendly and there are tons of Princess staff everywhere assisting. DrivesLikeMario Posted February 19, 2017 #17 Share Posted February 19, 2017 It would have to be like 50 foot or so....and high winds, at that. These ships are designed to sail through bad weather. I used to think that too until I experienced something different last month. The ship was due to sail in some real nasty weather off the coast of LA so we had to completely deviate our itinerary and sit in port for 2 days. The captain said the ship wouldn't sail in that high of wind and waves. First time for us.
Cruisin' Chick Posted February 19, 2017 #18 Share Posted February 19, 2017 On one of our Hawaiian cruises out of LA, there were record surf at that time, but the ship still left on time. Some people spent the first night or two in their cabins from the rockiness and the pools were drained. But it can be rough seas as the ship crosses a strong current so I knew to bring my ginger.
