Lanyards with a Pouch vs Punching a Hole in the Cruise Card

Trying to decide which to buy before we cruise.... 2 lanyards with those plastic pouches...

OR just getting a hole punch to give the cruise card a hole for a string or necklace to attach it too (if so what corner of the card should I be punching - top left, top right - I don't want to damage the electronic parts of the cards).... Any thoughts are appreciated!

Actually, they will punch it for you at the pursers desk, to put on a lanyard if you like. I think the ones with the pouch would be a pain, as you would have to keep taking the card out of the pouch to open your door, to insert getting on and off the ship. Many dont like the lanyard, but I found it to be very useful. Mine had a do-hickey on the end to insert onto the card. They sell them in the ships store.

I was given a lanyard with a plastic holder on a recent cruise. Getting the card in and out of the plastic sleeve was difficult, and the plastic ripped after a few days. I'll stay with the old punch method.

DON'T punch the card yourself!!

Take it to passenger services or the casino. They know where to punch.

BTW: on our last cruise (out of San Pedro, CA), they punched the card at the check-in desk. Much nicer than standing in line at passenger services.:halo:

I actually use a poach, since I like to put a few $1s in there so I can give tips, if desired. I don't like to have much stuff in my pockets.

I use a husband for that. ;p

Like the other poster, the likelihood of me having pockets in a swimsuit and cover-up, or a dinner dress are about ZERO. But I despise the pouch kind and have a tinkerbell lanyard that travels on all my cruises!

They wouldn't punch our cards on the Majestic Princess because it will now mess up the electronics in the card - so we went the shop and they gave us free pouches to go with our existing lanyards. Just in case they roll this out fleet wide

Totally! I just saw on Amazon some fancy ones with beads and stuff, I think I will grab to go better with evening attire. We like to dance and you're right where in a dress do I have a spot for this silly card lol!

I always have a hole in the card and attach it to the lanyard without the pouch. When I used to use the pouches, my card slipped out once. The pouch on my son's lanyard broke once. Plus, it's a lot easier to just hand the lanyard over to the bar tender than fumble with getting the card in and out of the pouch.

I use a cruise card plastic holder with a Princess logo on a retractable badge reel with cord, with Carabiner clip and back belt clip. Very convenient to use. Got it at the ship's boutique.

Thanks! That sounds cool, I heard you could get them there but that they went fast, that's why I wanted to see about getting mine in advance, also I don't think the Princess logo'd ones will match my outfits LOL!!! ;p

I am a lanyard user and get my card punched at the passenger services desk. But I'm looking forward to the new medallion that will come to some of the Princess ships pretty soon. I know some have said they don't like the idea but I think it's a step toward a positive ease of use. No matter what the method is, some will like it and some will not. There will be no medallions on my next cruise so it's a punch in the card and a lanyard for me.

That's awesome! Yes the medallion will be interesting. Walt Disney World Florida has those wrist bands now for all their stuff, I love not carrying anything!

We did that on our first cruise where the kids were old enough to hold their own cards. The pouches fell off/broke off the lanyards. Once we got it back, but both kids lost theirs eventually.

I would punch the card and not do the pouches.

Good call, my spouse is kinda like a kid lol 😜 So I'm sure he would break/loose the pouch based on what I've read today now, so I think he punch is the way to go! Thanks so much for the info :)

When I sailed on the Golden Princess in a Window Suite in November 2016, I received the card already punched, and as a Suite Perk, received 2 leather card holders. I put my Cruise Card in 1 side and the foldout map provided in the other, and it was great! Easy to walk up to the bar-I had the Soda and More Package-hand over my tumbler, flip open the holder to verify I had the package and ask for my chosen drink.

I startled the crew member who was scanning cards for the Muster Drill though. Thanks to Cruise Critic, I already knew to have my card ready to be scanned. I paused just before the entrance, got my holder out and had it opened for easy scanning. The startled look on his face! His colleague spluttered with laughter, he saw I was a Blue Card and realised his colleague thought I might be unsure of what to do.

You will not have to worry about this soon. We will all be wearing a Ocean Medallion.

Tony

This is true, it is on the way! However I sail in 2 weeks so no Ocean Medaliion for me this time and in my less is more years I don't want to carry anything so good by wristlet, good bye purse and here I am asking people suggestions

Not being able to put a punch in the card will be more common as ships prepare for the Medallion but still use cruise cards.

It does not matter about all the past experiences about getting a hole punch; it will not be possible in the future, ship by ship.
