Kid jumps from Princess deck railing into pool

After reading some other threads, this made me think...

Don't the people who were in the pool deserve a free cruise, or some sort of compensation, for their stress

over this? One poster here was 'furious', so certainly the people involved must be feeling something.

(I'm joking)

You joke, but a kid on the Regal in December jumped into the pool and landed right on top of me and scared the crap out of me --- my back was turned, I had no idea he was there and planning to jump into the water until he was practically dislocating my shoulder (metaphorically speaking; just bruises as it turns out) with his ginormous butt (apparently his parents didn't get onboard with the whole prevent childhood obesity thing). I wouldn't have minded $50 OBC for the several martinis it took to calm my nerves . . .

On Grand a few weeks ago while watching a MUTS showing there were seven or eight boys jumping from the edge of the hot tubs into the pool. Ship staff members walked right by and did not say a word. I was about to get up and contact security when an adult approached the boys and gave them a scolding. The boys stopped and soon left the area. Those same boys were seen all over the ship over the course of the cruise, mostly causing trouble such as throwing things, running through public areas, and just being disruptive. Never once saw any parents with them. Of the 500+ children on the ship, this group were the only ones that caused any problems.

About 12 years ago, we were on a cruise that had an extended family that had caused problems exactly a year before and did so again on our cruise. The parents apparently spent much of their time in the casino dropping a lot of money, and very little time, if any, with their kids. My 8-year-old said she didn't see any of these kids at the kid area. They spent a lot of time sitting on a stairwell looking bored but also were doing things like running around the hallways (one ran into someone on our roll call), knocking on doors at midnight, etc. The parents were also nuisances as they were making strange requests of their waitstaff and cabin steward to the point that they were monopolizing the staff.

One day, one kid shoved my daughter in the pool. My hubby who was supervising her from the deck, saw this kid go into a hot tub. So hubby went over to the kid and started berating him. The kid said "No Ingles" and then ignored him.

I wished I had brought my digital camera with me (from then on, and on future cruises, I would put my camera in my purse and have with me at all times) so I could have snapped a photo and take it to the passenger services desk to make a complaint. And print out a photo and put it up somewhere public to shame the kid.

At our meet and greet, one of the "youth staff" came over to talk with us, and we were talking about this family (yes, they were the talk of the ship). The guy said that he had approached one of the fathers and said he or one of the other parents needed to watch their kids. He actually said, "I'm on vacation." The staffer responded, "You're never on vacation from being a parent." I wish I had gotten his name so that I could have filled out a made a difference card.

This family also were responsible for our cruise getting on that infamous blog that listed accidents, etc. that occurred on a cruise. This was because at our last stop, one of the mothers was on the gangway, trying to juggle a toddler and putting away her cruise card, when she dropped the kid into the water. The kid was rescued, but that night guess what was the topic at every table at dinner?

This was the only cruise out of 11 that I saw misbehaving kids, and in this case, they were all from the same family.

I wrote to Princess about this family and got a vanilla answer back. But a couple of years later, I read that an extended family from a South American country got banned from Princess after still another disruptive cruise.

The love the part where the family said they were on vacation! If you are on vacation and don't want to watch your kids leave them at HOME!!!!!! Let some else watch them.

I just finished my first summer cruise and there were a lot of kids. Many of them were unaccompanied by the pool, though they were reasonably well behaved, just a bit goofy. I was more disappointed with a crowd of teenagers who were making fun of people passing by.

Unfortunately that's typical of this time of year with lots of kids on board. :(

I'd be careful about photographing other people's minor children, especially in their probably skimpy swimsuits, unless you're certain you're catching them in something serious or criminal. I can easily see a parent thinking that was creepy and reporting the "passenger with a camera photographing my 13 year old in her bikini" to the staff. And I don't know if putting the photo "up somewhere public to shame the kid" includes the internet, but that can quickly spiral out of the original person's control as the dumb kids in this video have probably learned.

On my most recent cruise I complained to the spa staff about the 4 kids (estimated ages 8-12) who were using the bikes and ellipticals at peak time on a sea day. I was very frustrated that nothing was done. But I feel the most I can or should do is complain to the staff and reiterate my complaint on my post cruise survey from Princess. I can always vote with my feet (and dollars) if I get too frustrated.

You did not say whether these 4 kids were doing something that they should not have done, just that they were using the equipment. By your implication, they may have been "hogging" the bikes. However, they had every right to use the equipment, unless there was a time limit on them. Be thankful, if they were just letting off their teenage steam doing something as acceptable as this.

Was there something else that their actions made you frustrated, or just being kids in the way?

Must have adult with them in the gym under 18 on Princess and Carnival.

Kids are not allowed in the fitness facilities under age 16 so they should not have been in there (absent special permission - I've seen kids in specific sports been granted permission to keep training up).

That said, if the kids were using the equipment properly and actually exercising, I can't say I would get too upset. If they were clowning around and tying up needed equipment, I would have insisted something be done so that people could use it (this is not limited to the gym).

I've seen a sign on most ships that reads (more or less)...please use equipment for no more than 30 minutes so that others can have access).

I didn't mean to hijack this thread to make it about kids in the fitness center. I was just making the point that when we think rules are being violated we can inform the staff but frequently they won't do anything. Also, the Princess website says "Guest must be over 18 years of age to indulge in any body treatments and at least 16 years of age to utilize the fitness facilities." So no, the 8 year old does not have just as much right to be using the equipment as I do.

Also, these were not teens. I would estimate their ages as 8-12. The boy on the elliptical could barely stay balanced on it. I have taken my kids on 11 Princess cruises so far and they will be on their 12th in March. They started when they were 4 and 8 and will be 17 and 21 next March. So I am definitely not against kids on Princess. But my kids followed the rules for the fitness center (and the other rules as well).

This is always going to be an open issue. Because additional gratuities are such a large part of their take home and the customer comment system is a large part of their advancement potential, staff are VERY reluctant to be confrontational at all. If you really need something handled I have found it best to request a member of officer level staff (who are not on the same system) and they can sometimes be more responsive.

Thank you. You're right. We generally use the fitness center on board ship but I'm not so sure we will on the Island Princess, since it has been isolated to a windowless (and feels like airless) spot on the 6th deck.

A "snowflake" is a person who lives in a Fantasy World. They receive Trophies for doing nothing.

They get patted on the head for accomplishing nothing. They major in themselves at the uni and

get a degree while they study in their quiet space. They are 18-27 and are unemployed living at

home without any job, but believe they will be a millionaire when they turn 30. That is a "snowflake"!

My brother has one, so that's how I know so much about them.

I call a spade a spade and a spoiled brat a spoiled brat. No need to sugarcoat it. My son worked 3 part-time jobs to help pay for college, which he attended full time and his car lease and insurance. One of the companies he worked for was pooper scooper. He cleaned up after the dogs for people who could afford that service. Probably the residents of these so called snowflake kids who should have been doing it themselves. If someone between 18 and 27 is still living at home and not contributing to society by either furthering their education or holding a job it's just poor parenting. You can't blame the kids if the parents let them get away with it.

I remember reading about THAT cruise on CC. Hard to believe it was that long ago! Wasn't that around Thanksgiving time, or just before? What a nightmare.

Kid should be banned. But I would not ban the rest of the family. I believe in personal accountability.

Oh and ban the person who recorded it. The jumper was not 8. Should be able to behave without a parent holding his hand as a teenager. This was planned.

We were on Caribean cruise over Xmas and New Year, our first cruise of many. It was young teenagers causing mayhem, running into people spilling drinks, a sunbed thrown overboard late at night. Throwing ice and Playing up and down in lifts. It ended up with Princess staff patrolling the ship and manning the stairs and lifts. It did not put me off cruising but try to miss school holidays. If we go with P and O we try to get adult only.

I was on the Grand in mid-July, sailing from SFO. I love all kinds of children - but many of the approximately 500 kids on this cruise nearly swore me cannibalism.

"Nuisance" is the kind word. We had to leave the MDR two evenings, meals unfinished, because of kids literally running, screaming, or game playing through out the space. I am talking totally out of control. The parents were totally indifferent, and seemed to care less what type of demons they were raising. Depending on the night, the miscreants ranged in ages from about 5 to mid teens.

The maitre d' and servers offered only "I am so sorry," or simply shrugged shoulders.

I look forward to more adult centric cruises, and will avoid holes in the school calendar that attracts hoards of the little buggers.

Sorry to hear it but, it is summertime.

You've go to stick with Oct to Dec (not Christmas) and Jan to March for a more relaxed experience.
