Security?

Recommended Posts

RCCL staff may not have firearms. I don't know for sure and would be surprised if they don't at least have access.

However, cruise lines do hire private contract security officers who are fully armed. I had a relative "retired" SEAL who worked for a security company who provided armed plain clothed services to cruise ships and cargo ships in certain waters. There are also "Sea Marshals" that are similar to Air Marshals on some routes.

Great....now that i know the security are in plain clothes...im going to end up playing a game of "spot the cop" with myself the entire time LOL

I've been a cop for over 20 years. I can quite often spot another from a mile away. They're the ones that are constantly looking around them. Always. I do it every where I go. Too many of my brothers getting popped while just sitting in their cars. I would be very surprised if there was not a gun locker somewhere on the ships. But I don't know for a fact so I'll just say I would feel better knowing there are.

On a Princess cruise off coast of Costa Rica there was a small fishing vessel in trouble. Sent an open boat from ship out to them, to take water and a battery. Crew were armed, all outside decks closed to passengers and crew stationed on deck as well.

It really depends on the cruise line, their ISPS code, their insurance club, and the flag they fly. Many lines do carry a limited number of arms, many do not. I can't say for sure, because as I posted in the linked thread, the details of each ship's security plan is restricted, and only about 2 people onboard have access to the written plan, and know all the details. Even discussing something like whether or not there are fireams onboard, by someone who may or may not actually be in a position to know, to a person who has no need to know, is a violation of the ISPS code.

I have never known a cruise line's security officers to go "plain clothes" or "undercover". Most are not trained for that.

As for Sea Marshals, there are no "undercover" Sea Marshals. These are armed and uniformed USCG members who board ships to escort them in/out of US ports only. There are typically 2-3 on the bridge, 1-2 in the Engine Control Room, and maybe one in the steering gear compartment.

In certain areas, like the Gulf of Oman, where piracy is rampant, the cruise lines, and all ships will take on security teams, but because of the cost, and the insurance premium for having arms onboard, they will get off as soon as possible.

So we know many of the security officers are plain clothes but purely out of curiosity, are they armed?
Your first post in the thread you start and you are wrong! RCL has NO security officers in plainclothes, get your facts straight before starting a post!(n)

I am not so sure about that. We witnessed a uniformed security and plain clothed person of some type confronting a suspected shop lifter on Central Park (Allure) one night while we had dinner on the patio of Giovanni's. A couple of other "dark suits" with ear pieces showed up, then they separated the two suspects and continued to interrogate them. They then took them off in different directions.

With +30 years of cop work under my belt those guys were security and they weren't in uniform. It made for some great dinner time entertainment for us, not them.

Thanks Chief. Was hoping you'd add to the conversation.

Hopefully, not. But hopefully, well trained individuals can access weapons quickly if need be.

When they are needed "quickly" is a relative term. After many years carrying a firearm you can't be proficient if you don't train or at least handle it every day.

Doubt they are packing. It is a long way to the locked gun cage when seconds count and lives may be at stake.

I always (no matter where I am) look for that tell tale bulge under the suit jacket and can say "I have never seen it." So if they are then they are better at concealment than most cops I know; including myself.

I don't believe they have plain clothes/undercover security on board, makes no sense,

frankly would be a waste of security personnel, visual security works on board ship.

Why do people on this site need to know If they do or don't have weapons,

it is nobody's business, your on vacation relax.

We are going to agree to disagree.

Plain clothes staff are invaluable in observing acts that uniform folks miss- because the bad guy is looking for uniforms. They aren't necessarily looking for a business suit or Hawaiian shirt.

Plain clothes officers on a ship are just as valuable as they are to us on land. They can observe everything from theft, narcotic use, cheating at the craps table, assaults etc.

Think the question shouldn't be asked publicly or answered publicly. If you feel the need to know for safety reasons , ask the cruise company.

The casino floor is under the watchful eye of staff on the floor level and through ceiling cameras that feed into a security office.

Trust me. I'm well aware of that.

I was just further emphasizing my point that plain clothes staff can serve a number of a functions.

Maybe the cruise lines should simply allow passengers to bring their own?

Just kidding....that would NOT be a good idea.

Reminded me of an Archie Bunker solution to airplane hijacking - "...just arm all the passengers...." :D

Or add a Vegas style gun range onboard. Guarantee a big money maker on sea day.
