aprilsp88 Posted September 13, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Hi, Does passport needs to be valid for 6 months for a closed loop mexico cruise? It seems mexico has no such requirement (google result), is it true? How about Princess or the port authority at San Pedro LA? I want to renew the passport, but I worry not able to get passport soon enough as the cruise is approaching. Thanks, April
dforeigner Posted September 13, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Passport turn around times are about four weeks. If you want to renew your passport, don't wait. It is easy.
satxdiver Posted September 13, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Some countries require your passport to not expire within 6 months of arriving in country. Mexico is not one of them for US citizens. So I don't think you will have a problem. If you want backup bring your birth certificate (authentic copy). Make sure your birth name and current name match exactly or bring legal documentation (i.e. marriage license for females).
Thrak Posted September 13, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2017 You can do a closed loop without a passport. Check with Princess and ask what they need. However, I would simply renew my passport and be good to go with no hassles. Seems the wisest course to pursue.
paul929207 Posted September 13, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2017 You are not required to have a passport for a cruise to Mexico (assuming US citizen). So one expiring soon is not a problem
skynight Posted September 13, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Assume you are a U.S. Citizen. If so, look below for official passport information. Just a note, you do not require a passport for a closed loop cruise to Mexico. You can use other official documents. You will require a passport if you have to leave the ship for an emergency in Mexico and fly home. https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/mexico.html
graygirl Posted September 13, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 13, 2017 FYI, we just renewed (August) 2 passports and applied for a new one for our daughter and all three were in our hands in almost exactly two weeks.

This was our experience too. We just renewed ours and had them back about 2 weeks later. I was surprised but happy that they were back so soon. cherylandtk Posted September 13, 2017 #9 Share Posted September 13, 2017 April-what paul said. While you can do the renewal,it is not necessary. Since you can travel on this cruise with other WHTI documents, there is no requirement that you even have a passport, much less one that is valid for 6 mos. or more. aprilsp88 Posted September 13, 2017 Author #10 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Thanks everyone for replying. I have the impression that the no passport requirement is for travel before 2009, is that only for air travel? Thanks, April
Carolyn R Posted September 13, 2017 #11 Share Posted September 13, 2017 For air travel if you needed to fly home from Mexico in an emergency a passport would be required.

Flying is a whole new ballgame. Why not just renew the passports and be done with it for 10 years?
