Finger Lickin' Good. NOT!

You people make way too big a deal out of this.

First of all, this is a very isolated event, people rarely do this at the buffet.

Second, Stop acting so squirrelly. it will not hurt you or make you sick because food touched someone else's fingers.

You need to get out of your bubble....

I'll take the troll bait:

First, I see it almost every time I'm in the Windjammer. Not quite rare enough for my squirelly sensibilities.

Second, try picking up a book-- preferably one about biology (or at least Google "how does norovirus spread"). That will help you get out of your knowledge bubble with regards to how noro and other illnesses are spread.

Third, stop eating your food and licking your fingers in line when you're at the Windjammer. :halo:

While this is not aimed at everyone, it is aimed at quite a few. You know who you are. Please engage in a little buffet etiquette by NOT LICKING YOUR FINGERS prior to handling serving utenseils.

Yesterday I was waiting in line in the windjammer to load up a taco when the woman in front of me started snacking on whatever she had on her plate already. She got food on her fingers and proceeded to lick each one to clean them off. At this point she then grabbed the taco utensils and again licked her nasty fingers when she got sour cream on them.

As she left I flagged down an attendant so they could change the utensils.

I suspect this happens at every station every day but to witness it is another thing.

Please folks, use a little common sense.

Very well said. I agree with you 100%.

What about people who lay the whole tongs directly back on the food items. That everyone has touched.

That is one people don't bother to think about, but I also blame Royal, and perhaps other cruise lines. If a ship cost a billion dollars why can't they make a spot in the food bins to store the utensils between customers.? I often think Royal gives lip service (pun intended) to keeping things clean. I see bartenders handling glasses by putting their thumb and forefingers on the rim of the glass.

Love it! That’s always been one of my pet peeves...seeing “dinning room.” The correct name for a room used to consume a meal is DINING. One “N,” not two. That said, many people are not the best at spelling, so it is what it is, and I get their meaning.

I'm only a B- speller, so it was meant in fun. I do far more typos that misspelled words. While I know the proper use of their/there/they're or to, two, too. My fingers sometimes type the wrong one. [/threadhijack]

This is why P&O Australia has removed the buffet from it's ships - all food is behind a counter and dished out as needed. Also from memory Oceania dished out all food. I'm actually surprised that ships still have an open buffet - I mean I love helping myself but with sickness that can go around a ship so quickly I think more and more will be replaced with servers and not self serve.

This should be common practice. The line would be slower but I'd be ok with that.

You do all realize that many of these people are eating with there hands at their table, and then going back up for seconds (or thirds) and touching the tongs...I do eat at the buffet, and use proper etiquette, but try not to think about who's grubby hands may have touched my food :)

Thank You! People are doing more licking and who knows what else at their table then going back up to the stations for seconds! If you think about everything that can harm you on a ship and everywhere else, you will go crazy. I don't ever think about this on the cruise, only think about it when I read about it here on CC.

Is that fake science, lol.

No- just a grade school experiment to show children that clean hands Vs non washed makes a difference. That being said, as mentioned the second go round buffet visitors all bets are off. And touching with hands vs touching with hands that have been licked is astounding.

Simple thing for me is to go back and sanitize my hands before I pick up that piece of bread, french fry, etc. after touching those tongs. No big deal.

I worry more about the kids/adults that sneeze/cough into their hands and then touch the elevator buttons, the back of chairs (that you pull out to sit in) door handles..etc.

Those germs are all OVER the ship...to avoid them...don't cruise I guess, but

since that is not a fun option...just deal with avoiding those germs as best you can.

I don’t eat the bread. Lol- I think the optimal thing to do would be to carry your own hand sanitizer and do your hands once you’re at the table ready to eat your food then again if you want to go back to buffet. But who’s going to do that??

I also think the casino and the smoking areas ashtrays are germ breading grounds.

This is why I use my Purell after I use a buffet utensil before I eat.

I try to avoid touching the utensils. I'll use a napkin or in a pinch hold the utensils with finger that don't normally pick up my food - awkward but gotta do what you gotta do. That and going back for a last squirt of Purell before I dig in

A reasonable precaution - but you realize of course that when you take that bottle of Purell out of your pocket, whatever was on your hand gets on the outside of the bottle- so when you are done and put the bottle back in your pocket your hand is in contact with whatever had been on it before you started the whole exercise (with Purell - which is not terribly effective against many viruses in the first place).
