I like the freedom to be nude in a sauna/steam setting as one should be. Elastic waistbands on shorts block skin pores thus preventing the body from sweating properly, I will wrap a towel loosely around me but usually end up sitting on it.  It seems in recent times  (with the advent of mobile phone cameras?) people have become more averse to stripping off, you only have to look at the fools dancing around in a locker room when changing into sports gear/swimmers, in the past men would have just dropped their underwear & then put on whatever they needed to. I feel we are going backwards.

I fully agree with you as there was a discussion about this on another thread. I cannot understand how some guys can go into a sauna almost fully dressed and think they are deriving any benefit from it.

There was a guy at my gym who used to go into the sauna wrapped in saran wrap covered by a nylon tracksuit!

Some people prefer same-gender saunas and steam rooms. Others prefer coed. What is your preference, and if you care to share, why do you lean that way?

I prefer same-gender saunas and steam rooms for several reasons. I prefer to be nude and co-ed nudity is not really in vogue amongst at least my typical compatriot American cruisers. Also much like the locker room at my gym (where we have sauna, steam room, and whirlpool - all usually nude) I see the area as sort of a male bonding space, an excellent place for conversation and camaraderie amongst all types and generations. I regularly visit Korean and Russian spas both solo as well as with friends for similar reasons. I look forward to the experience as such an essential part of my vacations that even on land I typically make sure that the resort has a men's sauna at minimum.

Glad to see others in the thread with similar views, it seems!

I used to enjoy going into the sauna to sweat out the toxins. But now I'm wary since last month, after a Spring Breaker accused another man of statutory rape (in another room), I was caught up in being first questioned by ship security before going to Coco Cay and then the FBI and Sheriff on Disembarkation day! Scary thing was that I was alone with the supposed juvenile in the sauna too! He looked like a college guy to me. Lesson learned to not be alone with young ones in unsupervised location. He could have easily accused me as he did the other guy. I don't know if it really happened, of course.  In the survey I thanked them for keeping the free sauna, but to figure out a way to keep unescorted kids out. (I won't share more details.)

My spa experience so far is only on the Gem, but I assume this will be true for all ships:

  • There are lockers in the locker room. You make up your own code to use each time (4 digits or so) and then it will only open to your code.  You might want to try it first before actually putting your valuables in it.
  • If you're in an out of the hot water, be sure to take advantage of the water they have available to drink.  Usually with some lemons or such in it.

One downside for the Gem's spa -- the hot tub was challenging to enter/exit if you are short.  The steps were very far apart for me.  Our next cruise will be on the Escape and that doesn't look like a challenge there.

For some reason my shoulders have ached this week, and all I can think is how better they'd feel if I could stand in the Gem's spa pool and have the thundering water massage them a bit.

Is the thermal suite on the Dawn like the Jewel class shops where it is a central coed area and then separate men's and women's areas on the right and left? I liked that a lot on the Gem.

I’m going to British Islands on Dawn in September 23. Looking forward to the sauna. How was your experience last September?  Chapburg (at) yahoo. If you want to chat.

Anyone planning to be on the following sailings?

Diamond Princess April 20

NCL Jewel September 4

I hope they have not removed the men's steam and sauna on the Diamond like they did on Emerald.

I can confirm that the free sauna and steam in the locker room hasn’t been removed on the Diamond Princess. Both are quite massive.

Good News for Royal Caribbean fans.  Explorer of the seas recently completed a drydock refurbishment. Although they made some upgrades, including twin waterslides there was no change to the sauna, steam room, men's changing room or gym.

Yay!  I am on Liberty of the Sea on May 13th and have been on Adventure of the Seas. Explorer has that amazing main dinning room ceiling medallion that I would love to see.

Excellent news--thanks for confirming! Before COVID, we were supposed to sail on Explorer and had to cancel, and that would've been the last time before the "amp," so I was sad. If one good thing came out of the pandemic, it was the (temporary?) halt to removing these facilities from some of the ships. Too bad Freedom wasn't spared. She was probably our favorite. Now, we'll pass her over in favor of others that still have theirs.
