About the Daily Service Charge

I understand and share the same feelings. However, for us personally, we tell ourselves that we cannot monetarily punish those behind the scene for what others do. For that we put in the surveys.

And I agree, I try not punish those behind the scene, just the ones we have contact with. Like I said we usually do reward at a higher level than suggested, but only if deserved.

Cheers.

How would one know if they cannot afford it unless you ask the price? When I buy a car, house, trip, go to a restaurant, etc...I want to know what it will cost me.

Yes you would want to know the price of the cruise...but $12.50 a day? Morgan was right.

THANK YOU CJ,

As you can see...some of the reactionary responses are political...invested in all sorts of arbitrary rules and regulations recently enacted that people can hide behind. J. P. Morgan, the famous American financier, once said, “If you have to ask the price you cannot afford it”...so true.

Two Wheels,

LOL...where is your sense of humor? Relish the challenge!!;)

Don't let them fool you!

Those J. P. Morgan types got to be J. P. Morgan's by knowing exactly and to the penny what everything is costing them.

Cheers.

If I asked a member of the crew where a certain thing was, say the casino, and they told me how to get there - they are doing their job. If I asked a member of the crew where the the casino was and they took me, then to me they are going beyond just their jobs and deserve recognition. It is called old fashioned 'customer service'. That is the difference these days. Would the crew on MSC tell you or take you?

Crew on MSC as on any other cruise line will do different. If you are close to place he /she will take you,if it's on other side of ship and they are doing something ,they will show you .

If you remove the service charge they will make it as uncomfortable for you to do so as they can. I have seen people try/remove service charges on 2 occasions while I was waiting in line at guest services the last night of a cruise (DCL and CCL).

MSC was the same before consumer protection organisations stopped them 2014 in Europe. In 2015 the courts finally decided and only since then the passengers could cancel the Service Charges without a reason at any cruiseline not just MSC.

I am quite optimistic that MSC will follow the others (who would have expected that Costa and NCL stop the automatic Service Charge!) and sooner or later will include it in the price. Certainly this will increase the prices a little bit.

We are cruising MSC for the first time in March. We are from the UK, have been cruising since the early 80s and have never removed the service charge /gratuities in over 40 cruises. Today we rang MSC to enquire about prepaying the service charge to avoid having a large dollar account at the end of the cruise. I can only advise anyone from the UK who is happy to pay the service charge to prepay. The exchange rate given was exceptional.

This is a great idea! We have a Greek cruise in May and I may want to lock it in as I am seeing the exchange not looking for us right now.

I don't think the OP wants to tip for excellent service. He seems to not want to pay the service charge at all....

I sense the same as well. There is another post by OP about Mealtime Restaurant Drink Package. I think there is a pattern about wanting everything but paying very little.

No, it would not be helpful for me, it would only be helpful for you as it would just save you from the time and effort of locating the information yourself.

Nobody spoon fed me, and nobody should spoon feed you either. As an adult, I see the two different terms used. I realize there must be a business or legal reason to use two terms instead of just one (which would seem to be easier). I took it upon myself to research and LEARN the difference. Once I understood, then I was able to see the issue in a whole new light from an informed perspective. I had the information, I wasn't guessing or relying on the guesses of others.

I think you (and everyone else) should do the same. Or not. It is up to you on whether you want to know, or if you want to be ignorant on the relevant facts.

Perhaps if you had done the research, you would be able to comment from an informed perspective instead of just trying to be snarky.

Wow!

If you know the difference, why don't you educate the rest of us? I can't see a single reason why you would hold on to that knowledge and not share it.

We agree...I can't see a single reason either.

I see many of them. All outlined (and ignored ) in the post you quoted.

If you don't have the initiative or desire to learn on your own, then why should I spend my time doing the work for you? If you locate the information and still need some clarification, I'd be more than happy to help, but you have to put forth SOME effort on your own first.

Then why don't you just ignore the requests rather than telling people that you're not going to respond to them? That way, people can think that you just didn't see the post or chose not to respond, as opposed to appearing obnoxious in your replies (whether it's intentional or not, I'll leave to you).

I would ask you the same, however when a person directly addresses me (via the quote feature), I have a right to reply...even if it is a reply the they, you, or someone else doesn't like. I'm sorry you think that insisting that people performing minimal research on their own...simply to make them more knowledgeable, is somehow obnoxious. In any case, there is no amount of snark (clever or not) that is going to make me do someone else's research for them.

I think what Mr B was really saying (although what do I know?[emoji6]) is it just isn't a nice way to talk to people. This is a friendly, helpful wonderful forum. We're all pals, all here because we love to cruise. Some people know much more than others, some people are better at researching than others, some of us have been members for years, some making their first post. Personally, if I can answer a question, it makes me feel good. Everyone is different but it's nicer to be nice my mum always told me.

I think that Mr B was saying that I should just ignore posts instead of replying. However, if Mr B had ignored my posts instead of replying (IOW, followed his own advice) I would not have responded to him, you wouldn't have decided to chime in, and I would not be typing this reply. None of that would have happened. So knowing that not saying anything stops the discussion, you have to ask yourself why people choose to keep replying?

FWIW, if one person had just typed one sentence into Google and pressed SEARCH, they would have increased their knowledge and NONE of this discussion would have taken place. Yet people, for some unknown reason, seem to think it is easier to try to make clever forum posts instead of just getting the information. It is probably me though, I'm starting to think that I haven't properly communicated that I'm not going to perform other people's research for them.

I find it frustrating that people on here keep asking the same questions over again and they get answered over again and all you need to do is use the search function!

Skier Pete has most of the information in the stickies thread also.

Did you read the thread? As the cruiselines have totally different policies for the different markets, the information given from Skier Pete and the others in the sticky threads are very useful for cruisers from the US, but this thread is orginally about MSC Brazil.

Actually yes I did read it and Pete’s information is also for the U.K. market!

I was just pointing out that people are always asking the same thing and the answers can be found using Search.

Actually I was going to "chime in" as you put it after reading your first rather harsh post, but decided against it. When you continued in the same vein I made the mistake of adding my two pennorth. It was a mistake because nothing and no one is going to change your thinking. That's fine, as I said earlier, we're all pals here.
