Avalon hotels Provence

just booked Aug 10-20 Province to Paris.

Has anyone done this?. We arrive a day early and the Fairmont Monte Carlo is 479€ a night. Will probably stay in Nice.

There is no dinner offered on the 10th and a hamburger at the Fairmont costs 35€. Yikes. Doesn’t look like any other dining opportunities nearby. Maybe we will bring sandwiches from Nice.

Any insight on Monaco appreciated.

We also stayed at the Fairmont Monte Carlo in December prior to an Avalon cruise. The hotel was nice enough, helpful staff, very large rooms tho in need of a sprucing up in my opinion. There are plenty of dining options near the hotel and a short walk away. We had dinner at Tip Top, very close to THE casino, it was nothing fancy, we had pizzas, pasta and wine and felt the prices were very reasonable given where you are and the food was fine. If that’s too casual there are several restaurant near Tip Top. The Fairmont is in a location that is undergoing lots of renovations along the coast but it is convenient. It was a nice walk to the Prince’s Palace to see the Changing of the Guard - daily 11:55 am. We enjoyed our short stay in MC but in my opinion once was enough.

My recollection [from 1967 as a poor student, but also from 2011 as an Oceania cruise passenger] is that the 'real' Monte Carlo Casino is off-limits to all those except certified high rollers and James Bond types in black tie [or better, white tie]. Without that it's just a hilly, not very interesting riviera port. Nice is much more interesting -- Chagall Museum, Matisse Museum, Promenade des Anglais.

Thanks everyone. No, Monaco hAs not been verified. I would much prefer staying in Cannes

We booked our first night in Nice and will train to whichever town our hotel is in.

Have been to Nice, Cannes, Monaco already. Nice is my favorite.
