Look into big bus tours Miami... we did it after a cruise and got to see the city.. you can hop off at any of their stops and hop back on when you are ready... they have a boat tour of star island also ... Ft Lauderdale beach and south beach are popular

For Fort Lauderdale (actually all of Broward country), check out http://www.sunny.org. It covers all the topics you listed.

We loved the Hop On Hop Off tour in Miami. Great things to see. We used that as our mode of transportation to South Beach. Walked around the area, had lunch, shopped, went to the beach. In the evening we went to Bubba Gumps Shrimp Factory that was across from our hotel in an outdoor shopping / entertainment area. I can't remember the name! Someone else will I'm sure......

Skip The Everglades in the summer. It's the hottest place on earth and the mosquitoes are Jurassic sized.

Sawgrass Mills is the largest discount mall in the US. 14 anchor stores.

Zoo Miami

Parrot Jungle

Venetian Pool

Deering Estate

Miami Sea Aquarium

Fairchild Botonical Gardens

Honestly, when I was 11 all I wanted to do was hang out at the beach and watch boys.

Marriott Harbor Beach and any Ritz Carlton will have excellent kids programs.

That poster was talking about Bayside Market Place. Its a good place to hang out in the evening.

I would not personally recommend Bubba Gump Shrimp when you are in Miami, but with a family with kids I could understand it.

The list from Blueherons is good. I would add a few more options to the list:

Zoo Miami

Jungle Island

Venetian Pool

Deering Estate

Miami Sea Aquarium

Fairchild Botonical Gardens

Gold Coast Railway Museum

Snorkling in Biscayne National Park

Vizcaya

Bayside Market Place

Boat tour of Biscayne Bay

Lincoln Road

Sawgrass Mills (Mall outlet huge)

Aventura Mall (mall more up scale also huge)

Little Havana

Ocean Drive (to see and walk, don't eat there)

Cape Florida Lighthouse

And of course the beaches anywhere are great. It will be hot in the summer and it will rain. So plan outdoor things earlier in the day or towards the evening. 1-4pm is either crazy hot and humid or thunderstorms.
