Queasy123 Posted March 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2018 Hi all. My wife and I are being "encouraged" to join friends who booked a 7-day Alaskan cruise on the Celebrity Solstice for the first week in September 2018. We haven't cruised in years, ever since we both became terribly seasick on a cruise in Hawaii. We would love to hear from folks who took this cruise around the same time of year, with particular emphasis on (1) whether--as some have told us--this is not the best time to travel to Alaska due to the likelihood of frequent rainy days, and (2) should people prone to motion sickness (and limited to the type of meds we can take) avoid this ship/location/time of year. The booking would be for Concierge Class C3 Cabin 9265 Many thanks for any info or advice you can offer! Langley Cruisers Posted March 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 21, 2018 I understand your trepidation but there are many factors at play here. We cruised on Solstice and she is glorious. You do not know what kind of weather or seas you will get in Alaska at any time of year. You can have cool rainy days the whole time or beautiful warm sunny wish-I'd-brought-my-shorts days the whole time. My advice is to be prepared and take what comes. There are prescription medicines, over the counter medicines (Dramamine, Bonine), natural medicines (ginger, green apples), and non-medicines (Sea-bands wrist bands type of thing). If you are truly worried about it then I would suggest a cabin mid ship. If you are still worried about it and you think it may affect your vacation, perhaps cruising Alaska is not for you (not meaning to sounds harsh, simply honest). All the best. Rare Essiesmom Posted March 21, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 21, 2018 There is lost of information about cruising Alaska in the Ports of Call board here for Alaska. It might help us to know what ship you were on in Hawaii, and if you had other successful cruises prior to that. EM
Queasy123 Posted March 22, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Thank you, Langley. I appreciate your input. Essiesmom -- We took the American Hawaii Cruise years ago. Before that, we took two cruises to the Caribbean, on Norwegian and Carnival. My wife was pretty seasick on that last one. Also, we were younger and hardier in those days. Langley Cruisers Posted March 22, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2018 My wife was pretty seasick on that last one. Also, we were younger and hardier in those days. Aww.:( Maybe she should see her doctor about a seasick patch to wear. Nothing ruins a cruise faster than sickness of any kind. At least you could go along with your friends to Alaska, which is MAGNIFICENT!! Solstice has a Hot Glass Blowing show (free) which is not to be missed. She is a beauty of a ship and completely non-smoking indoors (casino included! Wonderful!).
sanger727 Posted March 22, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Did you take anything to prevent the sea sickness? I get horrible motion sickness but do just fine on cruises with preventative meds. I’ve used the patch and bonine with good results. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare Keith1010 Posted March 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 22, 2018 I first want to note that no one can guarantee what the seas will be like when you cruise. Even if the seas are typically calm they could be rough on your cruise and my experience is the reverse is true as well. Things you can do include: Book a room on a lower deck. Book a room mid-ship. Come prepared with item(s) to prevent sea sickness. With that said where does this cruise begin and end? Keith
Queasy123 Posted March 22, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Keith1010 -- the cruise begins and ends in Seattle. Sanger727--Both my wife and I used the patch on that Hawaiian cruise, but it wasn't totally effective. Now, some 20 years later, I can't take the patch or meclizine, so I would probably have to rely on sea bands. My wife should be able to use the patch. Rare Keith1010 Posted March 22, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Queas123 there is a good chance leaving out of Seattle you will have some rough seas. Book a room mid ship on a lower deck. There are other remedies. Look for Ginger Capsules. Even an apple is good. Even according to the manufacturer sea bands do not work for everyone thus the other items I mentioned. NorthCarolinaBelle Posted March 25, 2018 #12 Share Posted March 25, 2018 I have had excellent results with ginger capsules, but I know they don't work for everyone. The only side effects I have noticed was heartburn when I took more than 2 a day, and also that they seem to thin my blood. I nicked my leg shaving, and it wouldn't stop bleeding! So ask your doctor before you take them. Good luck!
