Get rid of the art and auction

Recommended Posts

DH and I have been on 46 cruises and used to buy art from Park West auctions on the various cruise lines. We have over 15 pieces of beautiful art pieces, beautifully professionally framed, from 20th century artists Picot, Bellet, and Tarkay. Everyone who has come to our house has commented on these lovely framed art pieces. I would totally disagree with those who have said the all the pieces are ugly and the framing is cheap - not so with the pieces we bought. We never bought anything for an investment, only bought what we liked. That said, DH usually stops by the art auctions on our cruises, but has not bought anything in probably 10 years because nothing has appealed to him or were too expensive. He mentioned the other day that fewer and fewer people attend and only a few items have sold on our 4 cruises in 2018. He has lost interest in the auctions. I read on the Holland America Cruise Critic board yesterday that HAL is cutting ties with Park West and going with a different art company.

What is too the value of the miniature certified prints they gift away?

We have ended up with tons of those and I think they are valued around $80-90 each. Over the years, we have put them in silent auctions or just given them away to friends and family who asked for them. They took care of their own framing. We have kept some thinking we would get them framed, but honestly, we just don't have a lot of wall space left!

The people I was talking to said they bought a piece last cruise. They said the pre art auction price was $475. Then it went to $1400 for the auction and they wound up purchasing it for $75.00.

I like looking at the art but I don’t enjoy someone giving me the “sales” talk about how art is an investment. I wouldn’t buy something that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars on a whim on a cruise. I’ve seen pieces (not on a cruise but in a gallery) that Id be willing to pay a lot for but the second someone tries to convince me that if I don’t purchase it right this second, I’ll miss out on a fantastic deal and that it will cost triple or quadruple later on, I walk away.

I’m curious if you have children and have they expressed any interest in inheriting these pieces?

I’ve been reading article lately about how adult kids of the greatest generation and the 75+ people don’t want their stuff and so it is becoming such a problem that you can hire companies to come give a flat price they will pay and they will haul the stuff off and sell it on eBay etc.

I think about this with my jewelry since my daughter has no desire to have any of it.

I know you said it is for your enjoyment now and not for investment. I’m just curious if you have a plan for it for after you are done with it. Thanks for a reply if you want.

We went to look at the art, but I just put the names of the artists that I liked into my phone. They all have websites, and I'd rather just buy directly from them if I were to purchase anything. It just seems like a hassle to have to do the auction/deal with shipping/etc.

Personally I did not see anything amazing about it, but if people like looking and buying stuff, more power to them. It's the same as the jewelry stores and such. I waited until they had some $5 day for stuff and managed to get a pair of sunglasses that I actually needed. There was a lot of random other stuff in there though.

None of this garbage on Carnival Horizon. :)

Like the lady said her husband has noticed less and less people attend, maybe this is going to go by the wayside like diamond jewelry— millennials like my daughter are just not into the cost vs enjoyment ratio. She doesn’t see the point.

But why does Horizon not have it? Do you know?

Btw. It’s the last sea day and I have nothing left to do lol. We are nearing the Louisiana coast. I’m not doing spa this trip, I won $376 off $30 last night in the casino. I just walked around and did the chocolate extravaganza. I’ve started packing.

Usually I don’t want cruises to end, but I’m kinda tired and I miss my husband and dogs.

I went to one art auction.

It was amusing.

Art is like music. There are well known musicians I would not walk across the street to hear for free. Art is the same way.

But unlike the op I think the frames are nice.

Why does he think that gold frames are outdated?

Classic yes; outdated no.

I'm no millennial, being 50 but I always admired one Park West artist, an Israeli who does these cool abstract geometric pieces, Yaakov Agam. Never really considered buying any though. And then my dad's cousin died with no natural heirs, and I just inherited five Agams plus some other cool art of similar styles. Between my mother, sister and I we kept most of his good art. So sometimes the heirs want it. But not usually.

What? $80 for a small certified print given free just for attending an art seminar?

I wonder who spends money on liquor? I wonder who spends money on cabins/extended balconies? And, who pays for food on a cruise? Who would go to "Cherry on Top" and buy ice cream? These are all wastes to me.

I like the art auctions, not that I ever bought anything. I know the prices are inflated, but if I really liked something and the price was reasonable, I'd get it. It' something that lasts forever and a souvenir. How long does "dinner at the steak house" last? Or a dish of ice cream?

Hate to tell you this about the Agams...but I got one directly from his studio (not website...I live by his studio) that I paid less than $1000 ($900 something). They were going for $3500 at the same time on the ship. I'm not sure of their going rate now.

I don't know and don't know if it will last. Maybe it wasn't cost effective to ship the junk to Europe and perhaps it will be added at some point in the US. They did have a number of Radu pictures available for sale to be printed on metal.

The art auctions do impact all cruisers since they occupy public space venues that could be used for other purposes.

You must be really bored to be spending your time on a cruise commenting about an art auction on an internet message board.

Bottom line (that has been discussed in this and the numerous other threads on the art auctions) is that if the cruise lines were not making money from it...they would be long gone.

If we're doing a wish list, I'd like to see them combine the art auction with the library and get rid of them both and put something useful in. BUT that's just me, I know there are a few people who like the art and the libraries so I'll just deal with it. :)

I guess you didn’t get to the part where I said I am bored, already started packing, Miss my husband and dogs, not going to spa, already won money in the casino, etc.

I’ve already given out tips, walked around, sat on my balcony, watched flying fish, etc. I’ve done all of my “lasts” and now I’m about to take a shower and get ready for dinner.

I’m traveling again starting on Wednesday and yet again the following week, so on this last sea day, I am kinda mentally done with this trip and looking forward to getting back home to get ready for the next two adventures.

Is that ok with you? Lol

A poster asked if we had kids or who would want the art work? Never wanted kids (we have been retired for a couple of years) and our nieces and nephews have asked the art be divided among them, as well as my jewelry and other art pieces like unusual pottery we have purchased on our 46 cruises and on other travels. We didn't ask them, they asked us if they could have these things.

Cruised last week on the Dream and saw so many places where Carnival said they were trying to "go green" so they would reduce the amount of papers printed out. However the art ads were in our cabin everyday I think. My opinion is the art is ugly and I would never go to an auction.

That’s so wonderful. I’m glad your pieces will go to those who will continue to treasure them.

All the wasteful papers is what got me to start this thread!! Save a tree!

I actually enjoy the art auctions on cruises. I find it one of the best people watching experience onboard.

I kinda smirked at most of the costs for the pieces. but last cruise on ncl I finally bought one. it was a piece we liked enough at the price we got it for to harbor no hard feelings if we overpaid. it was drastically less than list price, of course, and it was hand signed in paint.
