Get rid of the art and auction

Recommended Posts

I’m ok with arts staying. We won’t buy anything of course, but it’s fun to look at some works, although some of it is too artificial...

If somebody isn’t doing their homework about pricing, well it’s his or he problem. Same can be said about jewelry and other stuff sold on the ships.

.

True, the people I spoke with who bought the $75 piece were surprised when I said I thought it was a rip off. (Although I think they did a great job getting a once offered $1400 for $75 that they like and enjoy, so I don’t necessarily think they got ripped off).

They admitted they know nothing about art or the auction company

The art program is a fee based operation. Sell or don't sell, each cruise line gets their money fee. Many years ago, asked the Captain of the Rhapsody of the Seas who had the easiest job on the ship. He replied, "Those clowns who run the art auctions, they are useless".

Funny!

Just my opinion...but I see the art auctions as a scam. The stuff is all prints, same ones on every ship, they must print up thousands of them, and they aren't that great. I think people attend for the free booze, and some get suckered into buying...once again, MY Opinion.

I went to one and remember a gentlemen who seemed really pleased with himself and all the carnival art he had in his house. He swapped them out every month to rotate ALL the art he had. SMH

That's not art, it's a hobby obsession ;)

The art auction doesn't bother me one way or the other. I've never attended, but if others wish to that's fine by me. Is it art? It depends on your personal definition, I guess. Some of the prints "look" like originals, but I suspect they were created assembly line style. I know someone who works for a company that makes and sells "art." Many of their items are technically paintings and not prints. Workers create them following detailed instructions. Those workers aren't artists. Can art be created by non-artists? You decide.

Individuals decided what art is. If people like and it want to spend there money on it who cares. Even if they are following instructions they still have to have some talent to recreate the piece.

I agree that if people want to spend money on it who cares. That is what I was saying in the first part of my post. The only part of your response that I can't totally agree with is that it requires some talent to recreate art. The art part of making a painting comes in the original vision in the mind of the artst and in deciding what colors to use, where to place them, etc... Copying a painting does require dexterity and that the person doing it not be color blind. I can't agree that either of those involves artistic talent. I would consider it skill or maybe craftsmanship. But again, if people want to spend money on that sort of thing that is their business and doesn't bother me in the least. Ultimately, any judgment about art falls on the individual viewing it to make. Lots of things that gets labeled art these days isn't art in my opinion, but my opinion is just that, my opinion and carries neither less nor more weight than the next guy's.

Very interesting. So are these factory produced paintings just copies or lithographs or prints or what?

The art baloney generates so many unnecessary papers to the cabin. It’s ridiculous.

The “art” is in ugly and out of style golden frames and Carnival would be better to get rid of that junk and use the space for something better.

Who is with me on this?

I agree with you. But don't get rid of the auction. It's a fun 45 mins or so with free sparkling wine.

Alaska cruise ... art auction was fun because it was cold & raining outside. The auctioneer was a hoot ... because he had a STUPID canvas on an easel ... maybe 16 x 20 ... not big. It had numbers painted on it in all different colors. Then one # was circled in black paint. He was starting the auction at $125,000 I am NOT kidding! He was ... in a serious voice and straight face ... trying to edumacate us low brows as to WHY this piece was worth that $$$$$$$$. :')

I told him I am a fan of Mondrian and Escher. Which in no way resembles the kindergarten piece he was pushing.

I don't know all the details. I do know that most, or all, of the ones they do are abstract. I suppose that makes it easier. They have a template and detailed instruction regarding colors and how to mix them. I've not seen it done, just been told about it by someone that works there in a different department. They are NOT sold to Carnival as far as I know. They go to places like "Kirklands," "Tuesday Morning," etc... home décor places, in other words. I think some are sold to on line companies. I should clarify that I don't know for a fact that Carnival is selling this type thing. It's simply a guess on my part, since I've seen the same "original" paintings on more than one ship.

I tend to agree...also all of the jewelry sales pitches. I don't know if they are becoming less profitable now that the Internet is more widely available on cruise ships. We live in a time where people can research anything and everything online before making large purchase decisions....but even just a few years ago the Internet was very expensive and unreliable at sea. So the sales pitches left you thinking that you had a limited opportunity to buy this and that for fabulous prices, causing a lot of impulse buying. I think younger generations are better at avoiding these tactics, but I'm sure there are many who still fall for it on every cruise.

Has anyone read these books on an eformat? Specifically, Nook? I saw some of the reviews on one of the books saying it was not readable on eformat. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

Sorry, not Nook but I have the first three on Kindle and they're fine.

I gotta admit, we do walk through just to check out some of the art. I always thought some of the sports art like, Muhamid Ali paintings and other great sport figures are interesting, but we never buy anything...lol

As for wasted paper, I think it would be different if they recycled all that paper, but it just gets thrown in the trash cans. Maybe it would be too much of an expense to recycle all that paper?

If we're doing a wish list, I'd like to see them combine the art auction with the library and get rid of them both and put something useful in. BUT that's just me, I know there are a few people who like the art and the libraries so I'll just deal with it. :)
DW and I use the library every cruise. Would sorely miss it if Carnival took out one of the few quiet spots on the ship...

I enjoy the art auctions. I find it interesting to watch all the different pieces go up, to learn about the artist, the technique/style they’re known for and see how different people are drawn to them by bidding. I bought a piece of art on our last cruise. It was something I really loved (with its large gold adorned frame) with a price I was fine with. We have also bought art in port, but the one from the ship is my favorite. On a side note, I probably don’t fit into the typical art auction demographic being in my mid 30s.

I personally don't like the art but a lot of people do. My daughter always finds things she wished she had the money to buy. To each their own. It must make them money. If your talking about a waste of space well if it were up to me there would be no Casino or Bars. But then as I said, to each their own.
