Roxburgh Posted July 20, 2018 #102 Share Posted July 20, 2018 Rothesay, Isle of Bute Went on to a Glasgow message board so here are a few ideas for Rothesay and Bute. Come out the pier and you have the square in front of you, look to the front right hand corner of the square and there's a hotel/restaurant. Go up to first floor. for great views of the pier and seafront. Best fish and chips in town and plenty of locals eat in there. This one is a bit strange but for men only ....... visit the gents toilet on the pier before you go home, it's been slightly modernised but all the old basins and urinals from 60 years ago have been refurbished and still there. The building is a living museum of plumbing (and cleaning). A visit to Mount Stuart House is a must if you have 2-3 hours. Stunning architecture. Livingstones [restaurant] is nice and 51st state for pub type grub is good too. If you like beer, the Bute Brew Co. .... http://www.butebrewco.co.uk/ If anyone is planning to go into Glasgow (don't know if feasible) then let me know for places to visit. Anyone going across to Largs, make sure you have an ice cream at Nardinis.
SKP946 Posted July 20, 2018 #103 Share Posted July 20, 2018 I can see the photo of the coffee in #92, fairly sure I've seen all the others, was there a photo of the steam train windows "steamed up" ? Great photos BTW :)
Roxburgh Posted July 20, 2018 #104 Share Posted July 20, 2018 Rothesay, Isle of Bute Also - and assuming decent weather - the sail in and sail away should be very nice. Views of Millport, Little Cumbrae and then Arran with the mainland on the other side. Basking sharks are sometimes to be found in these waters so keep an eye out for them. Another type of shark might be a nuclear submarine heading up to her base at Faslane. But don't worry .... they only torpedo Regent and Silverseas ships. :D:D Once past Arran look out for Ailsa Craig which is a large rock sticking up out of the Firth of Clyde. On the other side you should see (hopefully) the Mull of Kintyre.
galeforce9 Posted July 21, 2018 Author #105 Share Posted July 21, 2018 Thanks for all the Rothesay tips. Here are more petit fours. The upload feature has reverted to how it was from the start.
galeforce9 Posted July 21, 2018 Author #106 Share Posted July 21, 2018 We called in to the pub in Castletown near the station. It had the CAMRA real ale award for one year. The bar was furnished with plaques bearing the names of the stations on the steam line. I tried some Bushy local ale.
Isklaar Posted July 21, 2018 #107 Share Posted July 21, 2018 I can see the photos you have just posted. Looks as if SB have upped their petit four game, good to see. They were rather same-y on Sojourn last January. Great bar!

galeforce9 Posted July 21, 2018 Author #114 Share Posted July 21, 2018 Found the Bute Brew Co after an open top bus tour of the island, which was packed with passengers from the ship. It was a great overview with a humorous driver, Paul.

galeforce9 Posted July 21, 2018 Author #116 Share Posted July 21, 2018 The bus tour was £8 for seniors or £10 otherwise. We saw rural scenes, many breeds of cattle, eagles, fine Victorian buildings and other islands, including Arran.

airtana Posted July 21, 2018 #118 Share Posted July 21, 2018 We are joining the ship in Reykjavik on August 6th. It is my understanding the Quest underwent some refurbishment this past Spring. Can you confirm and let us know what was done and how she looks? Also can you find out when they plan to convert the Patio Grill in the evening to Earth and Ocean. Thanks . . .
