looking to take a river cruise in the spring of 19, my first one and a bit unfamiliar.

Do they accommodate odd numbers of PAX? for instance a family of 3 in one stateroom or 5 perhaps in two cabins? Is any line better at it than another? I'm leaning towards Avalon at this time.

If you have an odd number of passengers, in most cases you will have to pay a single supplement for the odd person. Cabins sleep two people and pricing is based on double occupancy. Some ships have cabins for singles but they go quickly. If you are traveling with minors, there are further restrictions in that some lines will require an adult in each cabin or have a minimum age restriction.

I believe CroisiEurope has a few triple cabins. If you search for triple in the River Cruising forums there has been some discussion on this subject.

Uniworld also has suites which will accommodate three, as does Tauck. AmaWaterways has cabins which accommodate three, and Uniworld and Ama also offer connecting rooms.

We had a similar situation to you. 3 adults - first time river cruising - and wondering what to do about the single who certainly didn't want to pay the same rate for a single as we paid for a double cabin.

 

First thing I did was contact a river cruise specialist TA. She explained the situation on most lines. A few triples (but we didn't want that), and some cabins on the lowest deck usually offered on most lines but mostly on the lowest deck - and we didn't want that either! I know "picky"

 

. But she then told me that currently Avalon has a "single supplement waived offer" on many upcoming cruises if booked before the end of August. On those cruises where this is offered, there are 5 cabins available for single occupancy and they can be any type of cabin on the ship.

 

We were able to find a Danube cruise that we all liked and booked 2 Panorama suites.

 

If you are already considering Avalon, I'd suggest taking a look at all of those offering the Single waiver.

AMA's latest generation of ships was designed for this specific configuration. There are cabins for 3 which adjoin cabins for 2. These ships are used for their Adventures by Disney partnership, but also for regular AMA sailings at other times.
