Luvcrusn Posted August 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2018 There was an interesting article in The Washington Post about the rise of piracy incidents off the coast of Venezuela. It certainly raised an eyebrow.https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/as-venezuela-disintegrates-a-new-breed-of-pirates-threatens-the-caribbean/ar-BBLQJsy?li=BBnb7Kz
warmwinds Posted August 13, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2018 I just saw that myself. As someone who is cruising in October to the ABC's, it certainly gives one pause.

Mynki Posted August 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2018 Seemed to me that pirates were working the Casino last week on Equinox.....:') They've been working in the tourist shops on the islands for years too.... Something else I'll not worry about and we head to that part of the world on a cruise ship in december. :p
cltnccruisers Posted August 13, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2018 At this point I'd be more concerned about being on a catamaran excursion than anything on the ship itself. But as things get worse.... We do have the ABCs on our bucket list but not until 2021 at least.
MJSailors Posted August 13, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2018 Interesting for the fact that Trinidad is listed in the new Princess catalog as a port stop for some Caribbean itineraries for 2019 and 2020. If the pirate activity increases off the coast of Venezuela, perhaps Princess might need to reconsider stops at Aruba and Trinidad.

Tobago is on the 2018 and 2019 Christmas Caribbean Connoisseur cruises, and I really hope Princess takes it off in light of this surge. phoenix_dream Posted August 13, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 13, 2018 Interesting, but I certainly wouldn't cancel any cruises yet:). Worth watching for sure - and if issues continue I may not be interesting in booking any boating excursions in that area. But it is highly unlikely that the issues will affect the cruise itself. Never say never of course, but that would be a big escalation from jumping a local fishing boat to boarding a cruise ship. The ABC's are my favorite Caribbean islands. It would be awful (for all concerned) if the violence prevented cruising there.
warmwinds Posted August 13, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 13, 2018 They didn't mention any impact on the ABC's - it is just concerning since they are, also, off the coast of Venezuela.

After reading the article I was surprised though relieved that the ABCs were not mentioned as we too are cruising there in October. Aruba is awfully close at roughly 20 miles away. Just returned from Aruba after 2 weeks and I saw no concern for this. To ease folks minds, Dutch Marines are stationed at both Aruba and Curacao. Bears watching regardless.
