BENHANDEL Posted August 24, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2018 My final payment is due 10/4. I don't need to pay the grats by that date, do I? Can I take them off to lessen the total (over $400) and then pay them the next month?
tcw92 Posted August 24, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2018 you can wait and pay the gratuities when you get on the ship.
GradUT Posted August 24, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2018 You don't have to pre-pay gratuities and I never do. They will merely be added daily to your bill during the cruise with final payment at the end of the cruise.

You can still add them after you make final payment, you just have to make sure you are ready to pay when you add it. BENHANDEL Posted August 24, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Why pay them ahead of time? They are attached to my cruise details....by the time I had any clue about all of this they were already there. Maybe I agreed to it when I made the initial reservation (via phone)? I do want them paid in advance to have less to settle up on the ship....maybe just not this far in advance!. Thanks, all!

One advantage you have to leaving them the way they are is if they increase gratuities, you'll be grandfathered in at the lower rate pending you don't make any changes to your booking after the increase goes into effect. Just another way of looking at it.
Cherries Jubilee Posted August 24, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 24, 2018 You can just remove them before your final payment date and then put them back when you are ready to pay them.
teague38 Posted August 24, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Why pay them ahead of time? Why not? I like having everything that can be paid ahead of time paid before I go.
DramaQueen22 Posted August 24, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 24, 2018 For my past cruises, I have removed the grats so I don't prepay them. I know that they will then be deducted from my sign and sail at the end of the cruise. I budget accordingly and have never had an issue. I agree that it adds to your balance, so it's easier for me to have them budgeted out as part of our "spending money". Some folks like to pay them ahead to know they are done, but it's really your preference.
Joebucks Posted August 24, 2018 #11 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Why not? I like having everything that can be paid ahead of time paid before I go. Money now or later is the same thing. I pay mine later because I always tend to have some OBC left over. It would be completely silly to pay mine up front for "peace of mind" then to throw away OBC later. Rare Roz Posted August 24, 2018 #12 Share Posted August 24, 2018 Why not? I like having everything that can be paid ahead of time paid before I go. That's my philosophy...one less thing on my credit card at the end of the cruise. I recently booked a cruise for February, 2020, and wanted to lock in the tips in case they go up between now and then. Roz
serene56 Posted August 24, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 24, 2018 I do not add tips when i book my cruise - i do add them after final payment. call your agent and ask to remove them for the time being

firemanbobswife Posted August 24, 2018 #15 Share Posted August 24, 2018 How often does that happen? Not too often. I think the last time was Sept of 2016 so another one could be sooner or later. You just never know.
Moviela Posted August 25, 2018 #16 Share Posted August 25, 2018 Money now or later is the same thing. Since the first dollar was minted money today is worth more than money in the future. Weather you pay gratuities now, at the end of the cruise, or not at all is a personal question. Carnival will be happy if you want to pay ahead of time, or after the cruise via your sign and sail card. Tipping is still optional, but truthfully the people that serve you have earned the tip
grandmarnnurse Posted August 25, 2018 #17 Share Posted August 25, 2018 I always pay mine ahead of time, to have one less thing to pay for after cruise. As a matter of fact, I paid for my 2019 cruise, gratuities, and trip insurance in full at time of booking way back in January, and then booked my 2020 cruise, and had them add the gratuities and trip insurance to that bill, also. I try to pay up everything long before I set foot on the ship. I’ve also been adding OBC as soon as I accrue enough reward points to cash them in for OBC, so no worries with my bar bill either. LakeWobegon Posted August 25, 2018 #18 Share Posted August 25, 2018 Why pay them ahead of time? If you're going to pay them, then you can use an AARP gift card and get 10% off. Granted you could do this on the ship with the gift card too, but we just did it before then and were done with it.
