Alcohol cut off?

We are currently on the Sun and there’s an open bar. For the most part, everyone has been behaving themselves. But, tonight at Teppenyaki, we had someone in their 20s pretty damn close to alcohol poisoning. He almost puked on the common table. Luckily he got up and went to the bathroom. It really made me lose my appetite. At what point does NCL cut people off?? This guy was clearly drunk. Slurred words, eyes almost shut, had trouble focusing, etc. If NCL isn’t careful, they’re bound to have a death on their hands. Public service announcement: if that drunk was you, it’s not a good look and you should be rethinking your priorities. And don’t give me the “he’s on vacation, let him enjoy himself” lecture, because his enjoyment ruined our $70 dinner.

We had several NCL cruises where there was vomit in public areas, evidently from what my alcoholic friend would call "amateurs" drinking too much. Thankfully, on our last NCL cruise, the "public vomit" problem didn't raise it's ugly head. I was thinking it was a feature of open bar / UBP cruising or something. It may have more to do with the ages of the "amateurs" on board than the availability of the alcohol.

Yeah definitely the age. This kid was young. Definitely 20s. Luckily I haven’t seen any public vomit. I definitely think this will be my last open bar cruise.

I would not be happy either.

I was on a small ship once in choppy weather and there was vomit everywhere with nothing to do with alcohol, when we came out of our cabin, we could not believe our eyes as we did not find it bad.

I’ve been drinking legally for 30 years and have witnessed this scenario many times. On our last cruise (Gem) there was a woman passed out by the elevators at 6 pm the first night. I’ve also seen many drunk people at bars on land.

Yeah it's not just cruising that brings out the "best" in people. Our first cruise, not NCL, woman was passed-out / sleeping next to shore security before boarding the ship. Ships staff didn't seem to care and prevented anyone trying to assist her. We could see her from our balcony and she was there for at least an hour on the ground before several staff members brought her onto the ship in a wheel chair.

OP....that's unfortunate. Only time I've seen anything quite that bad was on the Royal Allure of the Seas I sailed a few years ago. Guy and his girlfriend were at the pool.....EARLY (like 8:00 a.m. early) on the first sea day. They were both in their late 20s, maybe early 30s. I was just going for a morning walk.

They both had drinks (Bloody Mary, maybe?). I passed by them again about 9:30. They had moved on to beers by then.

Went to Windjammer for lunch, and saw them in the same place with kind of looked like Jaeger Bombs, but not sure.

Passed their way again in the same place around 4-ish, and they were clearly fighting. She looked like a piece of bacon. Just as I passed them, she upchucked into a beer bucket. Not pretty! Instead of helping, he just laughed at her.

Not sure what happened then, but I never saw them the rest of the cruise.

That's the only time I saw something like that on a cruise ship. I've seen plenty of people who've been drinking do stupid stuff in the casino, though.

That being said, I've regularly seen people passed out in hotel elevators in Vegas.....nice hotels, too.

We always get the UBP and while I have gotten very drunk, I have never thrown up in public. I go right to bed. We did see a group of older men all stumbling around drunk on the epic. They had to be at least 60 and they were so loud and out of control. I was super embarrassed for them and worried they were going to drown in the hot tub!

You make it sound like 60 is OLD! C'mon now, give a guy a break!

Yup, many factors here. Plenty of alcohol, lack of food and a ship at sea. Anybody can get that way on any of those combinations, or just one. Take your pick.

I have seen this once and it happened to two guys on the first day of the cruise. They were clearly drunk and stupid and but I did not see them the rest of the cruise. I heard that NCL will cut you off the rest of the cruise and if you are caught, you will be escorted off at the next port.

We had a lady on our catamaran excursion that was clearly wasted. I watched one of the deck hands do the cut her off motions to the bartender. Next thing you know she came dancing out with a drink in each hand. When we got back to our port at the end of the day she was lying on the bottom deck passed out in her own puke. She missed such a beautiful time because we island hopped all day. I heard the deck hand tell her husband that they would help get her off the boat but then he was on his own.

Wow, I have been on 67 NCL cruises in 10 years and have never seen a single incidence of vomit. Stupid, loud, irrational and rude behavior, yes.

We also saw a guy strip naked and dove into a empty pool. This was on a carnival ship. They had the pool ladders roped off and a netting across the whole pool. That fool dove in head first and the couldn't move. This happened on the first night and he was taken off on a stretcher with his family in key west the next morning. Someone said he had broke his back. Now I love my pina coldas but I can not imagine drinking to that extent. [emoji19]

People will get as drunk as they want/need regardless of an open bar or UBP.

I've been on 12 cruises so far, across various lines, and seen my fair share of wasted people. Good luck finding a cruise without them. Even the super-premium cruises have their fair share of entitled drunks.

Just learn to deal with it and move on.

I was on the BA last October with some friends who are big drinkers. My friend and I went into port shopping in the rain, the guys stayed back at the bar. When we got back, they were completely schnockered so we put them in an elevator to go back to the room.

Well we got dirty looks from passengers in the elevator, so my friend says, “I am sorry we went shopping and this is what we came back to!” Everyone burst out laughing except the 2 drunks they were just trying to stand up.

I said Older not OLD! ;p I feel like us youngsters get blamed for everything but this time it was from people that clearly should know their limits but don't! I try to dance off all the alcohol I consume so if anyone ever sees me, dancing like crazy in a corner, just know I am working off my alcohol!
