Janespup Posted August 27, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2018 I have been back from Anchorage to Vancouver cruise, August 11-18th on the Star. Came down ill on August 19th and have been diagnosed with Norovirus. Wondering if any other passengers have had similiar experience.
neverbeenhere Posted August 27, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Did you try the rollcall?
Kamloops50 Posted August 27, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2018 You could of pick it up while traveling home. Norovirus is more common on public places tha on ships.
Colo Cruiser Posted August 27, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Noro is everywhere! You only here about it more on cruise ship because they are required to keep accurate records of those that report/diagnosed.
satxdiver Posted August 27, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2018 It will be reported on cc no doubt if others have a problem after leaving the ship. However it will not have to be reported by the ship since it was not discovered until after the pax disembarked. Maybe some pax will see the post and respond. Noro is everywhere and particularly spread any where people are together for days in a confined space.
JF - retired RRT Posted August 27, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 27, 2018 You could have picked it up at the airport or on the flight home.
Rare Coral Posted August 27, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Or she may have caught it on the ship - the OP is just wondering if any other people were on her sailing also have it.
Kamloops50 Posted August 27, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 27, 2018 No report on the CDC site for Noro on the Star.
BritinSoCal Posted August 27, 2018 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Mrs SoCal and myself were on the Star for that cruise - the only ill effect was that we both returned carrying a pound or two than when we boarded. Ate mostly in the HC (it's a curry thing - always get a decent curry in the HC, that and Congee with all the trimmings at breakfast), however did note that despite both there being wash stations and hand sanitizers, there was a significant percentage of passengers ignoring both... Noro is everywhere and particularly spread any where people are together for days in a confined space. Noro has more to do with poor hygiene than with a confined space. It is transmitted by "hand to mouth"--you get the virus on your hands by touching something that has been touched by someone who has the virus and has dirty hands. Then you touch a mucous membrane on your body. allowing the virus to enter. The best thing you can do is wash hands with soap and water frequently, particularly before eating. It isn't a bad idea to order dinner, then excuse yourself for a handwash before eating--you don't know who has touched those menus! MOST hand wipes and sanitizers do not kill noro; there are some brands that do, but these are not what you get in a grocery store. And as noted, cruise ships must report when 3% of their "population" is seen in the medical center as sick. In contrast, a school in the US doesn't have to report until 15% of their "population" is absent on a given day.

And also catching it by touching other surfaces or eating food which an infected person has contaminated not necessarily by dirty hands.
Rare ceilidh1 Posted August 27, 2018 #12 Share Posted August 27, 2018 I was on that sailing with my two kids. We are all fine - no sickness this end. But we also came back with an extra few pounds!
Rare ceilidh1 Posted August 27, 2018 #13 Share Posted August 27, 2018 I do know that on day 2 or 3, my older child came back from the kids club and reported that a child had vomitted in there. The way she described it, it was unexpected - it was Glacier Bay so not sea sickness as we were barely moving. But no reports that I heard of that anyone else was sick! Janespup Posted September 3, 2018 Author #14 Share Posted September 3, 2018 Good to know that no one else got sick. Could have been from hours in airport or airplane. Thanks for replies.
Lineaway Posted September 3, 2018 #15 Share Posted September 3, 2018 Just returned from the Star on Saturday. Didn't hear of or see anyone being sick. They did have hand washing stations and I did notice a lot of people using it.
Mrs.Gosse Posted September 4, 2018 #16 Share Posted September 4, 2018 Hope you are feeling better. At least it waited. I have had noro (here at home) and its awful. I would hate having it on the ship out of my comfort zone.
