Soot under foot?

When we were telephoned and advised by our cabin neighbour immediately above us to take a look out our balcony window, we had one thought in mind.  Soot!.  The previous postings about soot migration was of interest but as never experienced, we we’re not sure what we were looking at.

 

Advising the front desk, which took some time and the odd use of the English language, we achieved having supervisory people look into the mess.  No one could tells what it was and no one ventured out onto the balcony to so determine.  No one had any idea as to it’s origin but we all shared the same facial concerns as to the worst scenario.

 

The clean-up crew working into the night cleaning the whole area and presumably those adjacent if also contaminated.

oh that is disgusting.  and i expect soot is like paper toner or glitter.  ugh.

 

is that an aft facing balcony or a side one?

What ship is this and how far back on the ship is the location of your stateroom?

What ship and cabin?  We had soot like that on an Owner's suite (aft facing) balcony on the Royal Princess in December 2013.  The balcony was unusable throughout the entire Caribbean 7 day cruise.  I was hoping that had been rectified.  We've subsequently sailed on the Royal for over 40 days but always reserve a mini-suite now and have never had the soot issue.

This was the Crown Princess and we were in D703 which is aft/starbourd.  It is located directly below the protruding windows of the Skywalker. 

 

While our initial thoughts went to soot we realized it was not for it was wet and runny. As I say, nobody knew what it was and everyone we spoke to said they had never before seen such a thing.  I was wondering if anyone here would have any idea what happened to cause this

So, you are directly under the jogging track and the outside deck of the teen center??????

I'm thinking definitely not soot. Nice of your upstairs neighbor to inform you. I wonder how many decks were affected.

The snow has been a bit dirty this year.  Merry Christmas !

Definitely looks like soot to me.  This could be from cleaning the diesel engine turbochargers with ground walnut shells to remove the soot, without turning off the exhaust scrubber (if Crown has hers installed), or it could be a poor job of soot blowing the boilers, where the steam used to clean was a little too "wet".  Another possibility was that a deck drain was blocked with old soot and dirt, and the crew tried to clear it using high pressure air or water, without blocking all the other drains on the same line, and this blew the soot/dirt, and water out the unblocked drain, rather than forcing the blockage down the pipe, and the mess rained down.

I've seen soot and experienced it on the Celebrity Summit in an aft-facing cabin.  It looked nothing like that.  It was cleaned up with a vacuum very easily.  That looks more like a liquid of some sort.

Is it possible this was wet droppings from the auto window cleaner from the upper decks?
