There was smoking in the casino on the NS in the Caribbean (2022).

There was no smoking in the casino on the Koningsdam, Vancouver/Alaska roundtrip (2022).

Just off the Nieuw Statendam last week.  They do allow smoking in a small area of the casino.

As a regular cigar smoker I understand the outdoor area on NA. However lighting a cigar is a process  in the wind. Additionally,  ashtrays for cigarettes don't work well for cigars. How hard would it to be to buy a couple cigar ashtrays ?

You make a generally good point, but lately it seems like info you are linking to is not always up to date./reliable. For example, according to the FAQs, there are examples of  Pinnacle class ships that should have allowed casino,smoking, but they did not. Perhaps this is part of a transition out of stricter Covid rules.

It is important to point out that while smoking is allowed in the designated smoking area on those ships, it is only on one side of that open air deck. The opposite side is non-smoking, so it's not that smoking is allowed at the entire Seaview pool area.

When the wind blows, there isn’t much of a difference between sides

Oh, but there really is a difference. Because on an open ship deck at sea underway, the wind always blows aft, not sideways.

The wind very seldom blows directly aft.  You need to factor in the prevailing wind and the combination determines the effective wind direction.  The structure around the open deck area also creates swirling winds which send the smoke everywhere.  Port days are usually the worst.  It is not usual for the secondhand smoke to affect most of the Seaview pool area.

After 24 years at sea as a US Naval Officer, serving on a variety of different vessels in all sea, wind and weather conditions (including major typhoons), I believe I have the qualifications and experience to know how wind behaves on a ship that is underway in open ocean.

Doesn’t seem so.  It’s a legal location to smoke, so don’t worry about it.  But the fact is that the second hand smoke affects a much larger area than just the smoking section.

I’m sure that he can find a wind protected table by the Seaview pool on the Rotterdam to smoke and the wind won’t bother him.  Just as a point of reference, Are cigars and pipes permitted in the smoking area os is it only cigarettes?

On my last cruise over the holidays, there was no smoking in the Oak Room on the Noordam.

I really wish they would eliminate smoking in the casino on Pinnacle class ships.  The second hand smoke is not contained to the casino and goes down to the Music Walk entertainment area.  Anytime I spend much time in the BB King lounge, I come away with a scratchy throat.  I don’t know how many people actually smoke and gamble but I haven’t seen anyone smoking as I walk through the casino.  I’m sure sure it would be a net gain in revenue if they eliminated casino smoking.

I hear you bigbeergut.  We were on the Volendam in 2018 and my husband would want to walk through the casino to get to the other side.  I said, Let's not walk through there.  It stank.  And we are former smokers.

What's the 'inconvenience' in walking around the casino to get from point A to point B? If you're not playing (casino), no harm, no foul, right?
