Cough, eww, stink......

You're not required to go there if the odor will bother you. You know where the smoking section is, so it should be very easy to avoid it.

Its like if you like to breath fresh air and not like stink? Don't go there?  Your picking a fight with the wrong person. Smokers do not more privilege  than non smokers. I never knew how much my clothes stunk till I stopped in 83. My dad smoked for over 40 years and my mom more. Me, stopped at 33 and still here.

Smokers have one small area on one very large ship. Hardly 'more privilege' by any standard.

Let me guess, your a smoker and the 3 likes you got are from smokers? I used to be one and didn't care I was making it hard to breath for non, and didn't care I was making peoples clothes and hair stink. But just stop smoking for a year and you will be shocked how much you pick up on the stink it causes. I stopped 39 years ago and don't miss it one little BIT.

I don't smoke but my husband does. Do I wish he wouldn't? Of course but each person makes their own choices. As RuthC stated the smoking area is very small. The ships are huge in comparison. Although I don't smoke I am often with my husband in the smokers area chatting away with other wonderful people who just happen to be smoking. If the smell bothers me, then I kindly excuse myself and leave. That is my choice. There are many places I can go on the ship where I won't smell smoke. That's great you found a way to move on from smoking, but each person is different and their way may not be your way. Regardless, some of the most amazing people I've met on Holland America has been in the small smoking area on the Lido deck, smell and all. 🙂

If you came onto this thread just to bash smokers, and pat yourself on the back for successfully quitting, feel free to move on now.

Like yourself, I also quit several years ago, and haven't looked back. But DW still smokes, so we tend to spend a fair amount of time relaxing in the ship's smoking area socializing with wonderful, friendly people.

I actually  posted and had it removed by someone about me quitting with the help of a hypnotist, going from 1.5 -2 packs a day to stopping after only 3 sessions. Thought it might help someone stop as when I stopped they were $6 a carton. I don't need to pat my self anywhere. I figured the money I saved was good enough. This is my last comment on the subject as I see people who cruise and smoke are above the rest of us..........................................

Wrong! I am not a smoker, and have not been for decades.
I just believe in trying to be fair to all. I can avoid a small area of the ship (if I choose) if it allows others to have a place to enjoy themselves.

I have never cruised on HAL.  We are considering HAL because of itinerary.  Our preferred cruise lines are Celebrity and Azamara, which do not allow smoking anywhere indoors, including the casino.  I subscribed to this thread to find out which HAL ships prohibit smoking in the casino, since we have found that it is necessary to walk through the casino to get to the theater.   I have no objection to outside smoking areas.   I close with a quote from a now deceased American  "Can't We all just get Along?"  (Clue--Rodney)

I've sailed on most of the HAL ships, in every ship class, and can't think of one ship where you are required to go through the casino to get to the theatre. Sometimes you might have to go in the theatre on a different deck than your preference, or use the forward elevator, but that's not the same as being necessary.

What ship are you looking at booking? I want to check the deck plans.

We want to do a 2025 14 day rt from Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Copenhagen to include Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki.  Those itineraries are not available.  It appears smaller HAL ships don;t allow casino smoking.  We are also looking at Princess and Royal.

I like your quote about chocolate.  We like Aldi's dark chocolate(Moser Roth)

Smallest HAL ships DO allow casino smoking...Zaandam and Volendam. So smaller and larger ships do allow casino smoking. It is the "medium sized" ships that do not allow casino smoking.

I'm not a (cigarette) smoker.

But do enjoy cigars when on vacations.

Loved the Sea View bar & the outdoor (but covered) smoking area on the Rotterdam last month.

So we just booked a cruise for Oosterdam for Greece next yr, this time with couple more cigar (only) smoking buddies.

We don't venture into the casino, so don't wanna wade into the smoking/anti-smoking issue there.

Enjoyed the cruises to Europe, since more Europeans are on those cruises, & many more of them smoke, making the entire relaxing cigar smoking experience truly enjoyable....

Thanks for this info. My husband and I are cigar smokers. We are huge fans of Celebrity cruises, in part because they provide nice outdoor  areas for smokers. I have been looking at HAL and wondering if the Sea View bar on various ships  would be a good place to smoke and  relax.  Is there comfortable seating besides the little tables?  Does this area generally have some wind/rain shelter?

The set-up at the Sea View Bar will vary depending on the class of ship, but all have a smoking area (not the entire outdoors of the Lido aft), at least some of which will be under cover. There will be tables and chairs where one can eat, just like in the non-smoking area. On the Nieuw Statendam, and I am guessing the other Pinnacle class ships, there are padded chairs with side tables. Very nice there.

Here is the smoking section of the Koningsdam Seaview Bar.  With the exception of the round white tables in the foreground, all the seating you see here is in the designated smoking area:

Yes, and this was clear (I thought) in my post quoting HAL's smoking policy on specific ships. The policy says nothing about casino smoking... Sea View Bar area only. Pretty clear..

We were on the NA about a year ago.  The sea view bar area with smokers was always crowded.  A fun bunch of people who have remained friends all this time.  If there wasn't a seat available, these friendly people would move over & make room for us.

It is my understanding that the NS has a similar area for smokers.  Looking forward to it.
