Smoking policy?

What is the policy on transatlantic cruises for smokers? Hopefully, away from non-smokers. Maybe just in the casino?

At Silversea, the comfort, enjoyment, and safety of all guests is paramount. Most areas on board are non-smoking, and, as a safety precaution, smoking is not permitted in guests suites or guest suite verandas or balconies and in all public areas, lounges and bars. However, cigarette, cigar, electronic cigarette and pipe smoking is permitted only in the Connoisseur’s Corner and in specifically designated areas. These areas include designated tables and seating outside of the Panorama Lounge and the Pool Bar, as well as on open Decks 9 and 10 aboard Silver Spirit, Silver Whisper, Silver Shadow and Silver Muse; on open Deck 9 aboard Silver Cloud and Silver Wind; in specifically-designated outside areas on Decks 5 and 6 aboard Silver Explorer; in a designated outside area on Deck 4 aboardSilver Galapagos; and in the designated smoking area on Deck 6 on Silver Discoverer.

 

The “designated areas” on decks 9/10 are as I recall limited to the port side of the ship.

Certainly not in the Casino, but in addition to the above smoking is allowed on the port side of the open seating outside La Terrazza.

SS ain't like the mainstream lines - the Casino is hardly ever used - I was recently on two 7 day b2b Caribbean cruises (the demographic being rather different on the shorter cruises) and I saw people in the Casino quite often - this was of note because it's so uncommon. You can't smoke in there anyway.

 

Although there are several designated smoking areas, in practice you generally only find smokers outside the back of Panorama and on the pool deck port side. And the Connoisseurs Corner, a closed away room which is where the cigar smoking is meant to happen altho' if you have inconsiderate cigar smokers on board, they smoke in any of the designated areas. Not a problem most of the time.

 

As an ex-smoker, I know where it all happens!

I have heard from friends currently on the Muse that smoking is allowed poolside on one side of the ship and that includes cigars. That means that at the pool bar and at half the tables where you would like to eat lunch etc the area is out of bounds to those of us who do all that we can to avoid second hand smoke.

 

If this is all true then the Silversea literature about the health, safety and enjoyment of "all guests" is at best misleading and at worst nonsense. Maybe if half the passengers overall and or half the poolside passengers were smokers would I let this slide. But c'mon... this is 2019, not the 1950s when people were being sold that smoking was good for you. Also, I note that Seabourn allows no smoking poolside meaning that everyone can enjoy meals and deck chairs in smoke free air. And the only nearby smoking area is the starboard area above the poolside bar which is next to its Sky Bar.

 

So what is Silversea up to? I imagine that they are really catering to a clientele that counts among its numbers more smokers, and is trying to hold onto that market segment, despite the fact that others will be put off.

 

We will try the Muse in a year. Will Silversea change its policy about the poolside deck by then? I hope so. If not, it's my last.

Smoking is a terrible habit and I am one of those irritating people that enjoys the odd cigar,  although my wife tells me I worry and fret far too much about what others think, and go to ludicrous lengths to try and not irritate others.

 

If you are genuinely concerned about your health from noxious fumes, then Silversea isn't for you.  The fumes belching out of that enormous chimney day in and day out are far more likely to cause you real damage than the odd and rare time you might find yourself sitting a few yards upwind from me.   🙂

Smoking at the outside seating area of La Terrazza?? Is this really the case? If so, it shocks me that SS would allow smoking at a dining location, even if that dining is outside on the deck of La Terrazza. Or do you mean the port side outside the Panorama Lounge?

How droll. Funny, after roughly 1000 days on Seabourn and Cunard ships, I have never been inconvenienced by the funnels’ exhaust. As you may know, these features are up high and so are downwind of where passengers congregate, especially when the ship is moving forward. 

 

No, I would not choose to be downwind of you just as I would avoid smoking areas on a ship. Maybe Silversea Muse and the apparently permissive and (to me) unhealthy smoking policy poolside are not going to appeal to me. 

 

In any case, this thread has the potential to be instructive to those who care about such things and are considering rival lines to Silversea.

Fair question, but you need to ask Silversea instead of posing the question here. On both of our Wind and Muse cruises last year this was in effect.

I was replying to your post where you stated that smoking was allowed in La Terrazza. I asked the question here so that others on this board could clarify whether smoking actually is allowed on deck at La Terrazza as I thought it was odd.   

 

The policy on SS website is clear, it does not include a reference to smoking  in La Terrazza. An older policy that was in effect Jan 2013 did include La Terrazza but that is the old policy, so perhaps that is your reference point.  

 

In any event, I board the Wind on Sunday and will verify for myself and also post the information here so that others are aware.

If you read my post above it refers to what was actually allowed on the Wind in April and the Muse in October last year. I think if you read back through other threads you will find that other CC posters have also observed this within the last 12 months, and have not always been happy about it.

Anyway, enjoy the Wind, including the atmosphere.

I, like UKCruiseJeff, am an odd cigar smoker and cruising is a great occasion to enjoy a lovely stick.  But I agree that smoking poolside isn't a courteous making it uncomfortable for others.   We were on the Spirit in January and walking by the pool was unrelenting, including dining at the Grill in the evening that we cut short because of that very reason.

 

The two spots that didn't seem to bother anyone were outside the Arts Cafe and one deck up outside the Panorama Lounge - both port side in ashtray designated areas.  We never saw or sniffed anyone light up outside La Terrazza.

I was on the Silver Spirit in December, and smoking onboard is still a serious problem, as far as I am concerned.  First of all, the best 2 outdoor areas on the ship-the Arts Cafe( a very special and wonderful place to get great coffee and snacks, to include wonderful scones), and the beautiful deck outside the Panorama Lounge, are infested with smokers.  Why is it that this ship, which has a great Connoisseur Lounge, right outside the Arts Cafe, permits smokers to still smoke outside on the Panorama deck?  There is no doubt that a very small number of smokers are running and controlling the smoking on this ship.  Each time I wanted to either enjoy a coffee outside the Arts Cafe, and/or a drink outside on the deck of the Panorama Lounge,  I had to come inside because the smoke from cigarette smoke was overwhelming.  When will Silverseas just limit the smoking to one corner of the pool deck, and the Connoisseur Lounge?   For this and other serious reasons I mentioned in my review of the Silver Spirit, I will never sail on any Silverseas ship, until their smoking policy changes.  This is 2019, and we know that second-hand smoke is extremely dangerous to our health!!

One thing about the smoking area outside the Paranoia lounge - it is quite clear that the port side is the smokers' side as evidenced by the ashtrays on the tables while the starboard side is not thus provisioned yet I have gone out for a smoke only to get the same sort of look from the non-smokers on the port side that I would expect only if I'd presented them with a sample of a bodily function.  Still, at least they get to do the flappy hands and fake cough routine.
